All good stuff, the beauty of Linux is nothing stays still for long, and there is something for everyone.

The KWin devs are aware of its dependencies and seem to be working on reducing them to make KWin more attractive as an alternate window manager.
That's what the say, but never managed to get it working as standalone. Haven't tried it since the KF5/Qt5 switch yet. It's in my todo borking list.

I just installed kwin from sid out of curiosity and it seems to work fine with Lxqt. I am using aptosid but get lxqt from the siduction Lxqt repros. I only had a short play but I can't see any advantage at the moment over OB. As expected It installs a load of dependencies but I have now uninstalled kwin+dependencies.

^ How does Lxqt work with Kwin? Could you post a screeny? I just looked at Lxqt and it looks like something from Windows 95 era.

I have removed Kwin, but with it installed you just select it from session settings in LXQT Appearance Configuration and log out/in. Currently there are eight themes for Lxqt including one called KDE-Plasma this is along with widget and icon styles so the look is changable.I just wanted to see if it worked and what it looked like, it did seem slower opening windows and also had some transparency when moving windows. I just did the minimum Kwin install there are some additional addons and decoration themes. I expect it will be quite polished when fully released, but probably not for me although I will keep watching it and maybe have another go when Lxqt is in Debian proper.

Any source available for ^^^?
Just lurking on the freenode irc. Thanks for the link to the "closed" lxqt bug 645.
I do have the desire to see the day when xorg is thrown under the bus and hopefully wayland arrives user friendly, However, openbox will always have a special place in my heart. Presently I set up my / partition way too small on my ssd iwth lxqt and sid and I play with additions to lxqt on an atom running testing. I deeply appreciate all who are kicking the tires of lxqt and seeing what works and what does not. peace out Mark

Yes, it does. That's the kwin defaults. It gives time to the "fancy effects" to happen. No delay, no effects. I always set it to instant and f*** off the fancy effects. Then kwin turns into that snappy and brilliant WM I use to like a lot. But, if you ditch the funny effects and take into account the way xfwm (a WM i always avoided in the past) is evolving lately, it seems to me that xfwm is finally becoming a true kwin killer/replacement. Maybe not on its defualts, as usual, but should do it if properly configured. Standalone xfwm is something I need to try soon.
Well, not in Jessie yet. Backports are needed for this to happen, or just moving to Testing or Sid to get xfwm 4.12.

^ Could you post a screeny with fancy effects and without?

After the recommendation for xfwm I thought I would give it a try and just installed xfwm4 4.12.3-1 and xfce-4-settings 4.12.0-2 ( I am running sid) this seems to add a few guis to the Lxqt menu called settings, display, workspaces, window manager and window manager tweeks.Compositing is enabled by default so I tried Plank and it now has animated icons ( if you like that sort of thing). It does look slick and is as fast as OB. I will leave it installed and give it a try when I get a chance.

screeny with fancy effects
Search for "kwin" in Youtube. There are all the animations with wobbles and shakes we've seen in Compiz back in 2007.

^ Very funny!
Read this sign ^.
It was for snap & titan, and about Lxqt with Kwin, not KDE with Kwin. I am just curious. I find Lxqt as from Windows 95 era.

Mostly what nore said if you want those bells and wistles from it.
@ ostrolek: I don't have a system with kwin ATM, sorry. My main HD went downshouth due to a rootkit like a month ago and switched to fluxbox. But I was using SolydK as my main system for more than a year. Properly configured and forgeting about the bling, It's as fast and snappy as any other typical WM. Set it to instant and no animations in kwin preferences and it will fly. What I like about kwin then? No tearing, instant expose, hot corners, pseudo-tiling, tabbing, grouping, setting windows to specific positions, displays or workspaces, etc... but this is the area where xfwm4 is catching up more and more being lighter on resources. As of today, I still prefer kwin, but xfwm4 is almost there.
PS, I'm takling about kwin 4 (jessie). Haven't got any satisfying experience with KF5 or kwin5 yet. As I've said before, now the transition is almost (?) complete. Maybe it's time to give Kwin 5 another chance.

Having had a bit more time with Xfwm4, I think it is a bit more polished than OB, Guis are clean and have access to all the gtk themes. However I thought I may have been a bit hasty with kwin so I reinstalled it along with systemsettings, below are the apt-cache sizes for comparison.
Package: kwin-x11
Source: kwin
Version: 4:5.4.2-1
Installed-Size: 75
Package: systemsettings
Version: 4:5.4.2-1
Installed-Size: 1173
Package: xfwm4
Version: 4.12.3-1
Installed-Size: 2980
Package: xfce4-settings
Version: 4.12.0-2
Installed-Size: 3140
Package: openbox
Version: 3.6.1-2
Installed-Size: 1206
Despite not wanting to like the bling of kwin it is actually quite good and seems faster than when I last used KDE some years ago. I have integrated graphics with a cheap Intel i3 cpu and Kwin is still fast. The themes are basic as installed nothing like the options of OB or Xfwm4. I think I will give it a run out for a while. I don't know a screen shot is going to show anything different than what is available on youtube. It is just Kwin ported to Qt5 and a lot of dependencies removed.
edit to add OB size

You cannot just install one package kwin-x11, but there'd be another 195 packages to installed, and those would take about 220 MB of disk space, so it is the largest of the lot.

Is that with or without --no-install-recommends?
Using the Openbox (3.5.2) session of Lubuntu 14.04 LTS but very interested in BL :)

Well this thread started as a Gentoo query and seems to have drifted to the relative merits of xfcewm & kwin with no interest shown by the OP.
I'm going to go ahead and close this one.

@HoaS, really? The title is Distro Hopping and it's a carry-over from #!'s Distro Hopper's Thread. Reopening.
I'll post a little about Android x86 later today.
No, he can't sleep on the floor. What do you think I'm yelling for?!!!
