EDIT: %#¿$& slow typing!!! Ninja'd by xaos52
Before you "reinstall" BL try to purge kodi:
sudo apt-get autoremove --purge kodi
and then just to cleanup loose ends:
sudo apt-get autoremove --purge
After that do a search to see what's installed:
aptitude search kodi

$ ser kodi
alias ser = aptitude search

if anything here is installed ( an "i" instead of a "p") delete the file ... there should be nothing installed if purge worked.
apt-get remove filename
Now try:
sudo apt-get install kodi
or
sudo apt-get -t jessie-backports install kodi
= = = = =
Since kodi is not in the 'stable' repos I don't think the "-t jessie-backports" flag is required but it's probably good practice to do so anyway. Because sooner or later you will want an updated app that has candidates in both stable and backports.

Then I ran
apt-get update

sudo apt-get -t jessie-backports install kodi --simulate

Sorry Egyptrules, Kodi is not installable at the moment because libx265-59 is listed as "not available"
See https://packages.debian.org/jessie-back … c-ffmpeg56
Hopefully this will change soon.

Yes, of course
OpenELEC is very good, apparently.

Kodi wrote in the install link here that
The instructions in this section are for unofficial Linux binaries that are un/semi supported by Team Kodi. Most of those binaries use system ffmpeg or even worse totally untested libav, which is not recommended for Kodi as we support ffmpeg only.
which i think as Head_on_a_Stick noted that ffmpeg56 requires libx265-59 which is listed as "not available"

Just to note that I have Kodi installed and running under heavy use in my Debian jessie system.

Thanks a lot. I shall try that and see how it is.

Kodi in jessie-backports has been fixed for several weeks at least, after the issue with libx265-84 broke it. I also maintain it in my unoffical multimedia-backports repository on the OBS--that has the advantage of rebuilding everything if I update a base package--so if I update x265, then that triggers rebuilds of ffmpeg and Kodi and nothing ends up broken, just unavailable until the builds finish.
