Glad to see that you "old" F**ts are still here. I passed the 69 mark this year and am gearing up for the big 7-0 next year. Aside the from the typical age-related aches and pains. I can't complain.

Before I forget (which seems more frequent these days), do any of you geezers have a link to good info about troubleshooting a crashed OS in TTY? 8)

If it is a systemd OS, you can use journalctl to see what happened.

Yup, I did that but wasn't sure exactly what happened. Whatever it was, it seemed to be Apple related and that the HDD (the third in 6 years) had bit the dust. The good news is it gave me an excuse to buy a System76 desktop pc.

Hey Sector11, thanks to you as well for sharing the systemd cheatsheet info. I need it. Sometimes I break my setup and get tired of reinstalling, so I'm hoping that I can "fix" what I break.

A case in point, I decided to get "creative" with LightDM on my arch-based distro and added a line in the config file. The problem was that I after I did that I couldn't log in. I tried to reboot via TTY and that didn't work. I tried to use the install disk and chroot whwd, but couldn't access the config file. So I had to reinstall. Luckily, I saved everything before I played with the config.

More recently, I performed a system update before I read that certain things could break it. Guess what? It broke and I tried all the cli combinations that various people recommended, but nothing worked. But then I discovered that my desktop pc also decided to give up the ghost at the same time....

Then, my arch-based distro on my laptop also crashed, not because of the distro upgrade, but because I broke it by messing with another config file. Aaaarrrggg!

Meanwhile back at the ranch, the Mrs., whom I recently converted to Linux after a long struggle, wasn't happy with the situation. I installed Mint on the laptop and restored her and my home folders. She's happy now, so I'm happy. I also had to promise not to mess with config files, but ... you never know.... ]:D

So I say "Can you fix it?"
"NO! And if you stopped messing with it you wouldn't have to!" {sigh} They just don't understand.

^ Hey Sector11, my old iMac bit the dust. I'm not quite sure exactly what happened but I suspect that something in the desktop's innards was killing the HDDs. In 6 years, 3 died. Yesterday, I received my System76 Sable PC with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS pre-installed. The PC is actually a custom-built Asus with great specs and it flies! I've configured so that my wife and I can compare Ubuntu Unity to Mint, which she likes. I've decided to stick with a mainstream, well-supported distro because my wife doesn't want experiments and tinkering on my part. Moreover, it's my main machine for my writing projects and I'm submitting various texts to small literary journals, so I need something stable and reliable. But my laptop (also a System76) is another story.... ]:D ]:D ]:D

Seriously 3 drives in 6 years ... NOT fun.

{cough cough} BunsenLabs is stable. Of course maybe not as Mrs. g33zr friendly as Mint.

So you have one "our" desktop that must be maintained "Mrs. g33zr friendly". A 'state of being' I can well respect, my wife has got me to stop messing with this one. I don't have the luxury to have two computers in the house.

^ I have mixed feelings about Unity, but overall I'd prefer something with less overkill. I'll probably go with Mint, but OpenSUSE Leap, the stable version, would also be tempting. I think my wife might like Debian Gnome. Perhaps I'll install those two on VB and have her take a look.
