I doubt that if the free radeon driver worked well in Wheezy, there was that much of a regression in Jessie.  Usually most of those video players are trying to use the xv video output by default--so the output of the commands

glxinfo  #(the first ten lines should be enough)
xvinfo
apt-cache policy firmware-linux-nonfree

or installing inxi and running

inxi -g

should be very informative.

I also don't know if Jessie's SMPlayer supports mpv--even if it does, the old mpv in Jessie isn't going to work really well with it, plus you have to manually set SMPlayer to use mpv in its Preferences.
