videos not performing right

So some of my videos are becoming stripes of multi-various shades of colors, and some of my videos are discolored, i.e. having no colors. I didn't have this problem with crunchbang. So this is something with the bunsenlabs OS, I guess?

Do you have the problem if you disable the compositor? "Menu -> Preferences -> Compositor"

What video card are you using? The results of

lspci -knn | grep -A4 VGA

may help

Also what are you using to play the videos, do you mean from the browser or from a client like vlc?

Oh yes, so from a client like vlc. In fact all the clients bungle my videos, whether it be vlc, mplayer, smplayer, etc. But i dont think it's the problem with the video? Because the videos used to be fine under crunchang system

And the funny thing is, the videos become fine if I open it with openshot, which is an video editor program. So for every bad video, I had to open it with openshot, re-render it under a new format. It only affects some videos, but not all of it. I tried to google it, but it seems I am the only one having such a problem. I disabled compositor and it still doesn't work.

Hi, after delaying the problem for over a month, I had to come back to it. Yes, it still persists in some cases but I am now able to watch my videos using mpv. I intalled mpv using

sudo apt-get install mpv

I also installed ffmpeg by using

sudo apt-get install ffmpeg

However, when I use mplayer, vlc player, BL player, smplayer, or GNOME player, I still get the spliced blurred strips of discolored strips for my videos. And I have taken a screenshot and it looks like this

And yes, it only happens on some of the videos, so I think there might be something wrong with certain codecs.

This video in particular has MPEG-4, but flash videos also seems affected, often having discolored resolutions.

I just dont seem to know what is wrong with it. Any suggestions would be really appreciated. Sorry for the long delayed response. I didn't want to think about the problem because I had so many other things to do in the meanwhile. Any input would be really appreciated, and thank you all so much for all your help! I wouldn't know what to do else-wise. And sorry for my discombobulated English. Engiish is not my native language, and I feel my English is getting worse every day because I no longer speak English at home.

^ you still haven't provided the info i requested.

as for the screenshot, i have no clue what the original video looks like.
the only thing i can tell for sure:

- the grey translucent bar at the top is most probably caused by the compositor
- the green line at the bottom looks familiar. i think it depends on which gpu driver you use, and which type of video output the media player uses. you have to roll up your sleeves and dig, be it mpv or vlc.

apart from the video info itself, also what does lspci -k tell you which video hardware & driver are in use.

And mpv plays those fine? If so, I think smplayer has the ability to use mpv as its player (If you need GUI).

using smplayer produces the exactly same result--it doesn't work. The only way for the videos to display properly is by using mpv.

maybe yes, but maybe the radeon driver hasn't?
i guess you should try the proprietary gpu driver (was it fglrx?), but please wait until someone more versed in AMD graphics problems chimes in.

You could try the proprietary driver, it uses more memory and isn't as stable as the open version but it should offer more raw performance.

These are the steps in full:

sudo apt install linux-headers-$(uname -r|sed 's,[^-]*-[^-]*-,,') fglrx-driver
sudo mkdir -p /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
sudo tee /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-fglrx.conf << EOF
Section "Device"
        Identifier "My GPU"
        Driver "fglrx"
EndSection
EOF

Then reboot to enable the radeon blacklist and start the proprietary ATI video driver.

If the non-free driver is too unstable for your liking and you want to return to the radeon driver you have now, remove the configuration file:

sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-fglrx.conf

You will also have to delete the radeon blacklist file, find this with:

grep -r radeon /etc/modprobe.d

Then remove the file that contains the line "blacklist radeon"

Normally I feel guilty about poking in and asking a question in a thread...but for this thread, I don't lol..
Anyway I know nvidia drivers have a command (nvidia-config) to autogenerate the needed xorg.conf file to use, does Radeon not have such a command? Basically what you describe is doing the same thing as the nvidia equivalent correct?

I would recommend against using those autogenerating scripts, they introduce needless abstraction and offer more opportunities for b0rkage, IMO.

The configuration file created with the here document in my post is only four lines long, that should be all that is needed.
