Libre Office 5.1.5.2 from Jessie backports, on i3wm - a terrible lag

Could you please let me know if there is a solution to fix a terrible lag, non responsiveness which is obvious while using the newest Libre Office from Jessie backports without going back to an older, non backport version? Large Calc tables are unusable and everythigh is just painfully slow.

PC or memory usage is not a problem, but the programme just does not works smooth. It is so on a i7 8 core machine with 32 GB of RAM and 500 GB SSD. I have turned of Java, Spell Checker. Those tricks does not work.

Libre Office
Version: 5.1.5.2
Build ID: 1:5.1.5~rc2-1~bpo8+1

I have searched the Internet but have not found a solution.

Have you tried disabling OpenGL/OpenCL, as per https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question … ging-5052/?

I will try to reproduce this on my system tonight and repost later.

There is a bug report for this already:

And a solution in a more recent version that has not made it into Debian 8 backports yet.

Or try downloading, building and installing the latest upstream version.
No guarantees that it works on Debian 8, of course. But maybe you are lucky?

^ That seems to work.

Installed and started fine.
I am not a regular lo user, so testing if it solves your problem is up to you.

If you have any problems installing - you don't have to build it, they deliver .deb files - let us know.

Try using the gtk2 frontend instead of gtk3. gtk3 is laggy also on my machine. See here

Re: Libre Office 5.1.5.2 from Jessie backports, on i3wm - a terrible lag

FWIW I would recommend LO Still rather than LO Fresh

LibreOffice Still is the stable version that has undergone more testing (over a longer time).
It is usually recommended for more conservative use.

https://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-still/

Is this thread [SOLVED] then?

Re: Libre Office 5.1.5.2 from Jessie backports, on i3wm - a terrible lag

just recently there was a very similar complaint on linuxquestions.org, and ultimately the problem was network-related, i.e. taking the machine offline fixed the problem.
the person who found that out is still searching if LO has a setting to completely ignore the network.

fwiw, i've been using libreoffice-still for a long time now and never had any problems. currently at ver. 5.0.6.3.
i thought it was an archlinux specific thing. apparently not.

Re: Libre Office 5.1.5.2 from Jessie backports, on i3wm - a terrible lag

I installed Fresh and have found that the lag is there.

I have found that it goes out while using narrow windows in i3wm tilling view.

It is everywhere while using i3wm tabbed layout.

Re: Libre Office 5.1.5.2 from Jessie backports, on i3wm - a terrible lag

Does the Still version lag as well?

I think the LibreOffice developers would appreciate a bug report if this is happening with their .deb

Re: Libre Office 5.1.5.2 from Jessie backports, on i3wm - a terrible lag

Have checked.

1. The lag is obvious with BOTH versions Still and Fresh.
2. Disabling networking in nm-applet doesn't help.
3. Could enabling gtk2 be an option? Is it really possible? How to do it?

Re: Libre Office 5.1.5.2 from Jessie backports, on i3wm - a terrible lag

It's supposed to be possible changing this environment variable "SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN" to select the VCL UI interface. It's supposed to live inside /etc/profile.d/libreoffice-whateverversion.sh. But where is this file located in Debian? At least getting LO from the repos. I cannot find it. Or is it now living into any other file?

Re: Libre Office 5.1.5.2 from Jessie backports, on i3wm - a terrible lag

I should have mentioned it, but I used the daily build version from http://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily … F/current/
Version 5.2.2, as seen in my screenshot above.

Have tried. Daily build version 5.2.2 does not solves the problem. Maybe it is related to my system configuration somehow.

Re: Libre Office 5.1.5.2 from Jessie backports, on i3wm - a terrible lag

It seems Debian packages work in a different way. I had the gtk2 version installed from the repos and after the last updates (Sid) LO went crap looking and odd behaving sometimes. It was the GTK3 switch, of course.

for some reason I haven't the libreoffice-gtk2 package installed.

apt-cache search libreoffice-gtk
libreoffice-gnome - office productivity suite -- GNOME integration
libreoffice-gtk2 - office productivity suite -- GTK+ 2 integration
libreoffice-gtk3 - office productivity suite -- GTK+ 3 integration

Installed it and all back to normal. Or where it was before GTK3 becoming the new default a few weeks ago.

BTW, I still don't know where the heck that environment variable is stored in Debian.

Exec=bash -c 'SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk libreoffice --calc %u'

is the Exec line I have in my local desktop file.

And

  <item label="Calc"><action name="Execute"><execute>sh -c "SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk libreoffice --calc"</execute></action></item>

is what I have in my menu.xml.

Maybe gtk2 mode is better for older machines (older = ones without gpus) though I don't think using gtk2 mode will help those suffering from lags and high CPU usage.

Using the Openbox (3.5.2) session of Lubuntu 14.04 LTS but very interested in BL :)

Re: Libre Office 5.1.5.2 from Jessie backports, on i3wm - a terrible lag

Try using

 SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk libreofficedev5.2

to force gtk2

If that does not solve the lag, try switching i3 to openbox, to exclude the factor i3.
