@bronto - that's pretty cool, going to to have to send it to some people I work with. But can you decrease the vertical exaggeration so Australia doesn't have an inland sea and make it look more like an actual raised relief map?

Fun with MandelLabs

Based on the pre-set .fract "hybrid 02 -rectangle heiroglyphs", with a sphere primitive. And some messing about with GIMP.
