I did a dist-upgrade and eventually arrived at a configuration file which had been amended (I forget which).
Anyway, I opted for option D to show differences but I didn't know how to get back to the update terminal window afterwards so I ended up closing the terminal.
I did a reboot and was presented with a login screen (previously was auto) and now it doesn't accept my username and password!
Help please!

You are correct! - and you have made my day, thanks.
Just for future reference, though, if I do press D to display differences how do I get back to the terminal?

I will be completely honest here: I don't know, I have been bitten by this before and never did resolve it :8
I would try exiting the pager (usually "q" works) or editor (":q!" in vim, <Ctrl>+x in nano), depending on which program was opened to compare the files.
