[solved] Chromium browser loading despite setting altnernatives

Hey all,

I've been encountering a problem where programs that seem to call a browser, are loading Chromium, even though I've specifically set Chrome as my defaults for everything.

For example, when using Sublime Text 3, clicking on documentation, takes you to a web page. It's loading Chromium even though I've got Chrome open, and also set as a default.

I've set it on G Alternatives and using the BL script in the Openbox menu.

It's also not consistent with every program. The same test in Geany opens in the default Chrome.

Hello Jason smile

How did you install Sublime Text?

Do the alternatives settings work for all programs installed from the Debian (& BL) repositories?

Hmm. That's a good question.

I installed Sublime Text via a .deb file from their own page. Ditto for the Adobe PDF reader.

But GIMP (which I think is in the repos?) also opens up Chromium.

Could it be a mime-type setting? What browser opens if you click an html file in Thunar?

I had it set to open with a text editor, but when I give it the 'default browser option' it's coming up Chrome.

So, I'm assuming the packages that you may have installed after the debian/bunsen install, are ones that are still seeing the Chromium browser  and not reading from the alternatives?   Are you using the alternative gnome-www-browser or x-www-browwser to point to Chrome?

I meant, what happens if you double-click an html file in a Thunar window? I don't understand what you mean by "I give it the 'default browser option'", but anyway, could you have a look at ~/.config/mimeapps.list - is Chromium anywhere there? If so, try replacing it with Chrome.

Have you got exo-utils on your system by any chance? If so another thing to try is to run
'exo-preferred-applications' and choose Chrome there.
Maybe you've got some similar Gnome utilities to check?

johnraff:

The 'exo-preferred-applications' did the trick! At least so far with the two programs  that displayed the behaviour. (GIMP and Sublime Text.)

As for the double-clicking in the Thunar window, what I meant was that the default response to that was opining a text file (in Sublime Text) and when right-clicking and going down to Properties, I can change the default option from within Thunar, for that file type.

I did have Chrome selected as the option for those alternative programs to point to, yeah.

@johnraff

So does this mean that the xfce preferred application (exo-preferred-application)  clobbers the debian alternatives preferences?
