Re: non-pae version

You can already install a jessie Live 586 kernel ISO and add the bunsenlabs repository(s). Then...

sudo apt install bunsen-*

You'll have to reconfigure alternatives to recognize the session, the thread on it is here...
https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=1236

Reading that, the results weren't great and I could do a ton better using RC2 or Official Release (coming soon) as a base. But yes, the challenge is getting the ISO small enough but still as functional as possible.

Re: non-pae version

Thank you for the explanation, I think I am getting to understand the problems.

So if it is problematic to have a cd-sized iso, and the debian installer+bunsen repository install is not satisfactory, would it be possible to create a live non-cd sized non-pae kernel version of RC2? That is, to have the same as the i386 image you have now, except for the kernel? Or would it take too long, bacause you would also need to change/tweak some other things, as well?

Appreciate the effort, and will wait for the non-pae version as long as it takes. It is my mother-in-law's machine, a bit slow already as it is, but completely functional, and want to make the most out of it with bunsenlabs.

Edit: just checked that debian 8.4 will come out on 2nd April. Are you planning to release bunsenlabs final shortly after that?

There is no 486 kernel in Debian stable, so 586...

No, install the image I linked, the CD-size "bl-Hydrogen-i386+NonPAE.iso", that's the one with the 586 kernel.

Configure GRUB_DEFAULT=$yourentry as described here to select the desired kernel at boot time.

Debian's i386 Builds Now Require 686-Class CPUs
[...]
Support for 586 class and 586/686 class processors has been dropped

sad

EDIT: this doesn't apply to jessie, only stretch and on will suffer.

Re: non-pae version

How many 586 processors are really in use today? I think the first computer I used already had a 686 (released in 1995).

Re: non-pae version

^ hmm. i had to check and unpack my oldest machine, an oooold amilo a1645.
uname says 4.0.5-antix.1-486-smp, architecture i686.

... well,

grep -i PAE /proc/cpuinfo

says it has pae.

i respect and understand that people want to continue using even older machines, though.

Re: non-pae version

Hmm thinking about this, anyone know of an option to simulate a non-pae architecture in Virtualbox?

Using older machines is fun. It is simply cool running a full usable system on a low powered thingy.
And furthermore you can collect some iconic machines from the past.
I , myself being a great fan of IBM am the proud owner of a T-20, a T-21, a T-40p, and a T-43. The first two running Puppy with Openbox/Crunchbang respin (with the original CB 9.04 configs) , the other two Debian , with CB Statler and BL.
Oh, not to forget a Toshiba Satelite Pro 4600, and a Dell Latitude D600  :-D
