Hi,
I want to make rxvt-unicode (urxvt) the default terminal in openbox. How do I do that?

sudo update-alternatives --config x-terminal-emulator

It did the job. Thanks.

You're welcome
urxvt FTW!
I pushed for it as the default in BL but no joy...

Thanks, one thing less on my to do list.

Almost +1. The only reason why I don't fully switch to it as my sole terminal is when used as drop-down not hiding when losing focus. If anyone knows a way, please, share.

snap, urxvt doesn't provide dropdown mode ootb (i guess you mean something like guake).
it is possible to approximate sth like that with openbox configuration (application section in rc.xml). is that what you are talking about?

My favourite too, but Terminator seemed to be the crowd-pleaser...

It is actually not a bad idea to provide an xterm or equivalent for those rare cases when you can get an xserver up with a terminal to fix something you broke. I would only mention it because I have done it, lol.

Hydrogen doesn't include xterm OOTB? (Reboots into Hydrogen - nope.) Was this an oversight on our part or a deliberate choice? At only ~2MB (including a couple dependencies) I think it should be included in future builds.
EDIT: ...and I see straight rxvt is only 621KB and has no dependencies...

I thought it came automatically via xorg, but I now see that xorg's dependency is on xterm OR x-terminal-emulator, which is satisfied by terminator. I guess that means that if terminator wasn't installed then xorg would demand to have some other terminal available, xterm by default.

Here's someone else who rebooted into a fresh BL to check....nope, no xterm, which is a surprise!
I think we definitely should have an alternative light terminal available.

But if terminator wasn't around, xorg would fail to install without some terminal. It would call for xterm automatically, wouldn't it? Or are you thinking of the case where someone uninstalls terminator without installing something else? In that case I guess xorg would be uninstalled too.

^ I was thinking of cases such as the one tknomanzr mentioned in post #9.

I see what you are referring to johnraff. I will leave it up to you all. Of course, anyone capable of restoring a system via a simple xserver + xterm with no window managers, etc is also probably capable of getting to a console and getting xterm if needed. I can't remember the specific instance that came in useful for me but it did likely save me a reinstall. I just know it was Crunchbang's default to install both an xterm and terminator.

I mean urxvtq, sorry. Yes, quake-like. Tried other ways/scripts to achieve urxvt drop-down, but all do basically the same (They do window sizing/positioning, but miss the iconify-hide part when losing focus. They just toggle). So back to urxvtq.

Yes please, since it is such an important application.

There is no need for two terminal emulators.
Why would xterm be needed?
Surely terminator can be used for any situation in which xterm must be employed?

^Yes I'm still trying to envisage the situation in which a BL system has a working X but no terminator. xorg depends on (not just recommends) xterm | x-terminal-emulator .

^ Is it possible to bork Python libs and still have a working X? If so, a native X term like xterm or rxvt could be a viable fallback. (Terminator is a Python-based terminal emulator?)
EDIT: At any rate, I think we've forked this discussion to the point of making a separate thread.
