HowTo: Reduce RAM usage in BunsenLabs

BunsenLabs Linux is a distribution offering a light-weight and easily customizable Openbox desktop.

RC2 32 bit at idle after boot...

RAM usage: ~145M of 1.88G, ~140M after upgrading xfce4-power-manager/removing fdpowermon
Disk usage: 2.28G

Let's trim some more RAM. Panel applets, they suck...

sudo apt purge volti clipit && sudo apt-get --purge autoremove

Reboot, I'm at 107M. If I drop nm-applet/network-manager and use ceni, I'm at 98M, 172M with iceweasel open posting this.

RC2 32bit, after removing volti&clipit, restart and found 86MB of RAM usage.
I have practically removed everything useful for my netbook (like bluetooth, cups, ssh, vpn...) cause it's an atom single core and need a really light system to run.

Guess you are managing volume with your keyboard function keys. Mine didn't work (only the ones to turn audio up and down, mute and everything else works perfectly), so I need to open alsamixer.

EDIT: 96MB with volti back.

EDIT: 96MB with volti back.

On my old laptop, where the media keys aren't behaving, I bind the amixer commands to the keys. Get the key names with `xev`, and in rc.xml set them to `amixer set Master 5%+` etc. There is a toggle mute command as well.

between volti and clipit, clipit is by magnitudes more useful & almost irreplacable!

clipit is one of the first packages I remove after a fresh install.  I've never really found a need for a clipboard manager, especially since they store usernames and passwords when copied and pasted.

^ yes there's that. it is definitely a case of convenience vs security.

though it never stores my login name & password (obviously, because it's not running yet when i login).
and it has an "Exclude" option which i never use, but i guess i should start right now...

Not sure whether this was attempted, but volume keyboard keys can be handled through volumeicon-alsa, which addresses alsamixer directly. I use it in favor of both volti and the xfce4 volume daemon. In addition, feh is lighter than nitrogen for wallpaper handling, but requires full Openbox restart to apply changes and configuration is manual through the Openbox autostart script.

Finally, one can recompile the kernel to drop all redundant features, but I guess it might be going too far .

No need to restart openbox. You can use a script to navigate/select a pic and modify and respawn fehbg on the fly, or setting the wall directly from feh (right click and surf the file>background menu on an open picture), Or even use Ranger to set the wall via feh.
