We're talking long term, we're not shocking the monkey here, but let's get some ideas and feedback.
No, he can't sleep on the floor. What do you think I'm yelling for?!!!

With that wallpaper and that much alpha transparency, I'd go for higher contrast: darker background (as dark as you can go and keep the gtk theme usable) and brighter text. Might also consider a heavier font for easier readability.
Be excellent to each other, and...party on, dudes!

It looks lush but I can't help but think that this flat fad will date quickly once it goes out of fashion.
At the moment though, flat is where it's at...

I am fine with the current theme. It's grey, though not too pessimistic and has that legacy opaque look. I agree with HoaS that the flat fad is allover the place and will eventually come to pass .
In a GNU/Linux daze since forever. Hail to Debian and Arch!

Then it'll be back to skeuomorphism with gradients and shadows and whatever else? Or Material Design?
Using the Openbox (3.5.2) session of Lubuntu 14.04 LTS but very interested in BL :)

Lol!
I ride a single-speed bike, a have facial hair and I use flat themes and transparency. I guess I'm a hipster.
-edit- OK, so too radical a change. Us devs had talked earlier about slowly introducing accent colo(u)rs into our default theme (selection highlight color, wallpaper logo, conky and clock color, for example), what do y'all think of that idea? It's easy enough to do on one's own but it would be even easier if I just did it.

I don't mind the OB/GTK themes we are using, although I personally like a slate-blue, and Paper icons. But I would be very keen on moving away from the #! grey background monotony - it is kind of elegant in its way, but too much grey is kind of...grey.
The slideshow on the BL homepage shows what some bright colours can do
If there was just a variety of highlight colour choices that could make the themeing easy. And maybe scriptable? It may just take an awk or sed to swap colours in a basic theme, so you could do
bl-themechange --blue
or someone might like
bl-themechange --ponypink

Good idea damo, this is something I'd like to work on.
And ponypink should be the name of our next release.

I like the grey. And while the current theme isn't 'flat' it's not glossy or skeuomorphic, or ... ostentatious. It's out of the way. I think that's what I love about it. It's clean, but not so clean that it's making a point about it. It's unobtrusive but not bland. I dunno. I'm not sure we need a refresh yet, and if we do, I hope the current theme sticks around as an option.

Some of us have talked about eventually moving away from the Crunchbang visual legacy. It wouldn't happen before BL Helium, although @hhh et al will likely be churning new themes out hand over fist in the meantime!

Some simple wallpapers to help define a color palette. I'm failing at uploading it to our BL art page, but it's online at least. Bunsen

...and I use a complementary "Paper Slate" icon set
You should have a link on your dA page: "+ Add to a Group". Click on that and then submit it to the BL group (for approval by an admin ]:D )
EDIT: it looks like anyone can submit it. The button is active for me anyway.
