[Solved] Libre Office doesn't open files across network

This issue has been bugging me for some time. Googling it results in loads of suggestions around fstab and permissions and unhelpful comments like "this has been a recurring problem for LO". None of the fixes made much sense and reportedly worked for some people but not others.
For a good technical summary see
Comment 6 in  which tells us that for recent builds of LO we need GIO support. 

So I installed libreoffice-gnome which adds the GIO support into LO and all works very nicely now.  Note that if you have moved to LO5 the libreoffice-gnome in our repo will not cut it and you need to go to Jessie backports for the recent version which will also take you to LO 5.1
