Small tweaks to software selection

Another thread mentioned Terminator, but as I read, it stays for the time being so that's good smile.

When I installed BunsenLabs Linux for the first time I instantly updated to Debian Testing and introduced the following tweaks:
> swapped Thunar for SpaceFM (same main features, easier for me to navigate and lighter on resources)
> swapped Volti for Volumeicon (Volti breaks on Debian Testing due to a dbus version mismatch and Volumeicon is visibly lighter on resources)
> removed the Xfce volume deamon (Volumeicon directly handles volume keys, Xfce volume deamon is no longer needed)
> installed firewalld and the firewall-applet GUI

Openbox is by far my favorite window manager and I usually have a preferred set of apps for main system tasks, thereby my opinion may be severely biased. Still, I feel those improvements don't hinder productivity and visibly reduce resource use.

Re: Small tweaks to software selection

It would be too much of a hassle to cater to everyone's individual preferences, Andy. As such, some defaults have been decided on and unless there is a majority vote, I don't think any changes will be made (especially before releasing the first stable version of BunsenLabs).

I fully understand the top priority is stability and a certain 'equilibrium' has already been established. I am fully satisfied with it, though I just thought some minor tweaks might be worth considering in the future smile.

"Minor" tweaks are always under consideration for the future, and suggestions for improvement are always welcome. Audio and power management in particular are an endless headache. However, the choice of filemanager is definitely not a minor change!

You might also bear in mind that the Crunchbang community, and this successor, have debated these things for several years, and your suggestions are not novel ones wink

Re: Small tweaks to software selection

Yes, I was somewhat afraid that certain apps were already established since #! times. I think I'll yield and simply apply my software 'patches' on my own boxes, when migrating fully to Bunsenlabs.

I think we can close this one for now. Thanks everyone for feedback! smile
