Boots up with ~250MiB used (only about 70MiB more than #!) and is as snappy as a pool full of alligators.

I like it very much, especially the extra options in the application drop down menu and the fresh new look to the interface.

Same here, it's a nice step in the right direction.

I've decided to give it some color
There's something about that shade of purple from the icons that I don't like much... I think it should be a little 'grayer'. I'm gonna try to do something about that later.

That's a really nice color combo pingu. I like the purple. If I was going to change the shade I would not go for "grayer" but rather a little more color saturation, then maybe darken a bit if it's too intense.
Why not throw one of those icons into the gimp and give it a try?

^ Isn't that Humanity Colors? If so, it comes with several color possibilities in both lighter and darker styles.
Edit:
If you need it and would rather not add that ppa to your sources.list, let me know and I can upload the icons to my github.

@Dobbie03 / Nili
thx! herbstluftwm's (phew that's a long name) gazillion borders / padding gives a lot to play with.
The monitor support is pretty cool beans too.
I might have to quit using it just so I can get some work done..
