[SOLVED] Printer unresponsive, cannot run hplip script

Hello there

I just did a fresh install of Bunsen Hydrogen. During the post-install script i selected to have printer support so I could use my HP Laserjet printer.
The printer gets identified when plugged in, but nothing happens when trying to run a test page. I've had this trouble with #! and it was easily fixed by downloading HP's install script and running it in ther terminal.

However attempting that for Bunsen spits out an error message that the script doesn't recognize the OS. I can select to treat it like Debian 8.3, but it then spits out that I'm missing several dependencies. I've tried to use synaptic to manually get the dependecies resolved, but some of the requested files aren't showing up.

any adviced would be appreciated.

Please post the exact error messages rather than vague descriptions of error messages.

Please also post a link to the location from which you downloaded the drivers.

Make  sure hplip is installed (via packages).

Then, in a terminal, run

hp-check --runtime -ldebug

It will tell you what dependencies are missing.

Re: [SOLVED] Printer unresponsive, cannot run hplip script

I downloaded hplip-3.16.2.run from https://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/ … pilotfiber

I gave the file permsion to be executed as a program. Then ran it in a terminal-

The missing dependency list was much larger, but I spent the night trying to find the files in synaptic and install them. I added the wheezy repos for some older versions of files like libusb 1.0

I attempted to manually install the file by running

./configure

and adding dependencies till it stopped giving me error messages, but after running make and make install i get this for trying to run hp-setup

Running hp-check --runtime -ldebug yeilds the following

lboo@nate:~/Downloads$ hp-check --runtime -ldebug
warning: CUPSEXT could not be loaded. Please check HPLIP installation.
lboo@nate:~/Downloads$

I'll note that I do have a version of libtool and cups installed, my guess is they are the newer jessie builds and maybe that's why the script is not detecting them

Re: [SOLVED] Printer unresponsive, cannot run hplip script

Bypass the 'unknown distro' error by removing bunsen-os-release:

sudo apt-get purge bunsen-os-release

Install hplip; it should now detect Debian. Then, if  you wish to restore the OS identification files, install again:

sudo apt-get install bunsen-os-release

Running hplip-3.16.2.run now sees my computer as Debian and auto intalls the dependecies for me.
I got to the gui setup for my printer and recieved the error codes when attempting to click 'add printer' to finish the setup

The printer DOES work, i manage to run a test page, then print the files I needed. Maybe some feature is not functioning properly, but I haven't seen it yet.

Thank you from the prompt and effecient solution. Will i need the os identification files later?

Re: [SOLVED] Printer unresponsive, cannot run hplip script

The information is used in some obvious places like the GRUB boot menu, so if you would like to have it call the install BunsenLabs across GRUB menu updates (happens e.g. when you install a new kernel) you should keep bunsen-os-release. Other software might display the information too, like conky, or screenfetch, etc. When removed, every program asking will think it's running on 'Debian'. No harm done if the package stays removed: just less branding.

Re: [SOLVED] Printer unresponsive, cannot run hplip script

Hi, I'm a bunsenlabs user (still rc1).
I had the same problem, and the same solutions worked fine for me, too: thank you all so much!
I have to say that I had to run the hplip.run file as a super user, no way to digit my password during the automatic installation process.
At the very end it probably hanged for this reason, but at that time the important stuff was done.
Thank you for the excellent distro!

Re: [SOLVED] Printer unresponsive, cannot run hplip script

Hi there,

I am new to both linux world and bunsenlabs and I had many troubles to install my printer. Thanks to @nobody I could successfully install hplip but I still had a problem with GUI for adding a printer, I was askin for user and password.

The error was "error: Printer queue setup failed. Error : successful-ok-ignored-or-substituted-attributes"

So I ran a terminal with "sudo hp-setup" and everything was ok.

Thanks again the trick smile
