External Drive - HDD

Hi everyone,

I did some search but i didnt find about this:

How can i install bunsenlabs in a external hard disk USB?

I want to do this using a computer with windows 10, without touching the internal hard disk. How can i achieve this?

Re: External Drive - HDD

Does your system have UEFI or BIOS?
I know how  to do this for BIOS systems, but I have no experience with UEFI systems.
Someone else will have to chime in for the latter.

Re: External Drive - HDD

In that case:

- boot from your install medium
- choose install
- Make sure to install to the correct device!
- Watch out when you are asked to install the bootloader:

You have 2 options:

1. You don't want the internal disk touched:
You will use BIOS to select the boot device:
Install the bootloader to the MBR of the external disk.

2. You will always boot from the internal drive and you want the bootloader to show a menu that allows you to chose which Operating System to boot into:
In this case, install the bootloader to the MBR of the internal disk.
The installer should detect that there is a Windows system on the internal hard disk and will automatically create a bootloader menu for you.

Option 1 is the safest option, because then you don't touch the internal drive at all.

Re: External Drive - HDD

Bunsenlabs has no real native support for a straight uefi boot. If you're using UEFI, you'll have to change your settings in your motherboard to legacy or "csm". If you insist on keeping UEFI boot 'on', then you'll have to follow the guide here, and create an ESP partition on your disk:
https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=391

Once the partition is made, you'll have to modify a few files to make it persistent on bootup, then download the uefi'd version of grub and have it copied into the /boot/efi/EFI/boot/ dir.   Anyway the full process is explained in the link above.
