I am having problems getting a Canon Pixma MP495 to print correctly. Sometimes it prints - more oftens it fails with a not connected message in the printqueue. I had this problem even with pure Debian pure when I had that installed so it sounds like a Debian issue ( or something I have misconfigured) rather then BL.
the bl-welcome script printing support installation goes Ok . Could it be that it is a WiFi network printer that is causing the issues. What is the correct protocol under network printer to use when setting up the printer ipps, AppSocket ( I am using this at present), ipp, https, ipp14 or LPD/LPR ?
Tried searching for "printing" in the forum but nothing relevant came up.

Rocky, I don't have a solution for you, but while you're waiting for replies you might also try searching the CrunchBang forums: http://crunchbang.org/forums/index.php

Did you install drivers from Canon? Did a search of your printer and looks like the way to go is get the drivers from Canon, then it shows up if you install with cups.
You must unlearn what you have learned.

I don't know why Canon doesn't provide Linux drivers on their U.S. site. I gave up on my Canon PIXMA printer (Linux driver no longer installs and inkjet refill costs) and recently purchased an HP Laserjet multifunction printer. So far, one of the best ADPE purchase decisions I've ever made. However, I experienced issues installing HPLIP from the HP site as well as the proprietary plugin software. The HPLIP version in Debian stable doesn't support my printer.

I'm equally surprised that there has been no third party developed drivers for the canon's. Is this due to lack of linux developers attempting it, or is it that canon's hardware is very hard to write drivers for?

Thanks to everybody for the suggestions. I did try getting the Canon drivers package but unfortunately it would not install as libtiff4 is a dependency and libtiff4 it seems was in wheezy but not in jessie. So it looks like the drivers are not compatible with jessie.
A bit of searching threw up several hacks to try to get around libtiff problems but I prefer not to mess about with the Debian base for the same reason Head_on_a_Stick suggests Dont break BunsenLabs
I had in any case reservations about introducing closed source items into my BL installation.

For what it is worth and in case it might help somebody I seem to have managed to get printing going (fingers crossed) . The printer was already present as noted in my first post having used bl-welcome to add printer support. In configure/add printers I opted for:
network printer
entered the printers IP address (the printer was originally set with a static address)
opted for LPD/LPR protocol
in the print queue field entered "l" which caused a list of option to appear
selected LPT0_PASSTHRU
clicked "Apply"
Printing seems to be working ( for now at least ! )

So what was it that you did differently/changed this go round to get it to work?

My hunch is it might have something to do with pissing off Microsoft. Why else would they offer Linux drivers on their European site and not the U.S. site? OTOH, I believe awhile back Microsoft had to tailor Windows for the European market to allow the removal of Internet Explorer due to a court order. So maybe there is some European law requiring manufacturers to provide Linux drivers for the European market.

Hah...just wait until the next stable release. ]:D

I'm not 100% sure but it may have been selecting the LPD/LPR protocol and in particular the LPT0_PASSTHRU
@KrunchTime - still working this evening after a full powerdown last night (fingers crossed !)
