Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

Finally managed to get OpenBSD dual-booting with BunsenLabs on my ThinkPad smile

For anybody who is interested, you need to use an MBR-style partition table if booting in non-UEFI mode and then just create a new partition using fdisk(8) and make it type "a6" (OpenBSD disklabel).

Then install OpenBSD, selecting "Use OpenBSD area" in the partitioning section (this will be the default option).

Once it is installed, reboot into BunsenLabs and add this stanza to the end of the file at /etc/grub.d/40_custom

menuentry 'OpenBSD' {
        set root=(hd0,4)
        chainloader +1
}

(see http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq9.html#DualBoot)

The above entry is my own and the "set root" bit points to the OpenBSD partition at /dev/sda4 -- in GRUB, the disks are counted from zero and the partitions are counted from one wink

Then run `update-grub` [1] to add the new menu entry.

[1] Or is it `grub-update`?
hmm

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

Great. Thanks for this, HoaS. They say having OpenBSD sharing a disk with other systems is discouraged for newcomers. This sounds encouraging.

I made a full cleanup of virtual machines a few weeks ago and BSDs went away amongst many other. Only a small buch remained. I want to add OpenBSD again. Probably both virtual and on metal. Surely sharing an HD with some flavor of Debian or maybe FreeBSD... Or at least will try to. LOL.

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

^I love the pink and green wallpapers! I was sick of Adwaita the day it came out, how long ago was that now? -edit- It's Arc? Why use that same crappy blue-on-white? OMG, the gtk3 css file, what a freaking horror show. Individual hex codes or rgba values, hundreds of lines of them (gtk-contained.css is over 4000 lines long).

How did the community start to turn against the project?

Obviously, there is a whole lot of butthurt going on there, I'd ask that we refrain from adding to it by commenting on that mess here. Thanks.

Interesting looking project, but I'll stick with Mate for my choice of GNOME forks.

The guy was talking about his now-defunct project Solus OS, which was based on Debian. There was a proposal to move Solus OS 2 alpha to PiSi. After the alpha 9, he closed the project. Alpha 7 was still based on Debian, but alpha 8 was created from scratch and moved to PiSi. Anyway, I got the link to this from distrowatch.

Just how many Wayland Live ISOs are there?  If SmurfOS were the only Ratpoison (or whatever) Live ISO, it would be "the best" by virtue of there being no others.

I feel the developer of RebeccaBlackOS should be commended both for offering one of the first fully functional Wayland Live ISOs and for his steadfast support of his favorite celebrity, despite the hate she gets from the internets.  I can relate.

Sure, I got the link from Distrowatch, and I am glad I did. Ikey didn't say this much before. If you are using Mate or LMDE, then you are using some of Ikey's apps. Most of the other Debian based isos use Ikey's installer.

RebeccaBlackOs? I don't know anything about it, or about wayland. But, I would be happy to play with ReactOS. https://www.reactos.org/news

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

This time I'm hopping to a completely different distro, actually to a different laptop with that distro. I was lucky to obtain a new laptop with a 15' 6" touchscreen, 8GB RAM and 500GB HD at a real bargain price. I hadn't used Windows for nearly 6 years. (Only played with Yoga 11 with Win8.1RT for 2 months before I sold it.) This had OEM Win 8.1. After reminding myself about Win8.1, decided to take the offer and install Win10. There won't be any dual booting--I have my dedicated Linux laptop, nearly 5 years old but still doing well. After nearly 6 years, I'm going to be Windows noob!

^Oh, yes, it's completely real. It has became kind of a 'meme', or something as 'You are doing it wrong' on internet smile))

I think that the RebeccaBlackOS distro maintainer choose name just for fun. It would be as someone choose name DonaldTrumpOS in a year or two (if I correctly understand what's going on in USA right now)  ]:D

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

I've been using Firefox most of the time for so long that I thought it is the best. I had a dislike for Internet Explorer. To my utter surprise, I found the new MS Edge browser much more responsive than the newest Firefox.  I do lot of work in the net, so a quick & responsive browser is a must. Its really strange learning to use Windows again.

A everyday Linux user wrote somewhere in the net,  "Every now and then, it's nice to break out of your bubble, to really get outside your comfort zone and see how things are "on the other side of the fence."

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

^Oh, I've broken outside the bubble and spent much of yesterday outside of my comfort zone with Mac OS X (10.11 aka El Capitain).  yikes

The aging iMac still has decent specs with 3.06 GHz and 12 GB RAM, but the OS boots much slower than any Linux distro I ever ran on it when I was dual-booting--even with extra RAM! Also, I don't see this OS version as an improvement over earlier versions. If anything there's more bloat than ever. After wiping the drive and a clean install, I attempted to restore all settings, folders, and files with Mac's Time Machine, which now functions differently than the last time I tried it. I then tried Migration Assistant, which I last used years ago, and struggled with that. Finally, I called Apple support and asked the technician the best way to restore my files. He wasn't quite sure, but seemed to favor Migration Assistant, but also got lost in the process. He then passed me onto his supervisor, who was more knowledgeable and helped me through the initial M.A. confusion. Since then, I've been deleting older apps/versions that came with the restore. Unfortunately, unlike Linux, I am unable to uninstall/remove apps that I don't use, e.g. games and all the i this and i that crap that I prefer not to use because Apple/Mac says they are part of the OS,  mad

Meanwhile, I've installed my favorite cross-platform apps, and have a functional desktop PC. However, I don't consider Mac OS X to be superior in any way to most of the Linux distros I've run on it during the past 6 years. I can also say the same for many of apps that come with the OS, so I don't use them. As I've already stated elsewhere, my next PC will NOT be an Apple product, but most likely a ZaReason box. smile

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

I finally decided to give MX15 a go. Great stuff. I think I have a new favorite when someone coming from win or mac asks me to install something else in his/her old creeping lappy. Previously I used to install some flavor of Linux Mint or SolydXK. From now on MX15 will be it.
