The rc2 ISOs we're testing right now weigh in at almost exactly the desktop RAM usage as the LXDE non-free Live ISOs (way less USB/DVD image size and installed disk space usage, though). So I thought I'd install the Bunsen packages over LXDE. I can't figure out how to have LightDM recognize the BL session.
I'm sure I'm being obtuse, but I need help.

It is done via x-session-manager.
To change the session manager use
sudo update-alternatives --list x-session-manager
to list alternatives.
Set it to /usr/bin/openbox-session for bl.

^obvious, I knew I was being stoopid. Thanks Doc, I'll mark this case as sol-ved as soon as I test it. Minkey 8o

Well no, not obvious at all. I always have to think it over a bit before making the connection

Some day maybe we should have a startup script for BL along the lines of startxfce4 for example, or whatever LXDE uses, (but probably much simpler) along with a .desktop file in /usr/share/xsessions and a member of debian alternatives.

^I like that idea.
Anyway, Dr. Xaos was right. I just had to run...
sudo update-alternatives --config x-session-manager
...and choose the number for /usr/bin/openbox-session.
Then I had to install gmrun, tint2, compton and nitrogen to get a "BL" desktop. This still left a crap-ton of packages not installed, a sluggish touchpad, and I couldn't access my other partitions in pcmanfm. I fixed that by replacing the polkit-gnome line in ~/.config/openbox/autostart with...
/usr/bin/lxpolkit &
That was as far a I went with it, I'm now testing our rc2 ISO and it's superior to the LXDE one in every way.
Marking the thread [SOLVED].

^I haven't used LXDE for a while, and respect it for what it's doing, but still think BL is better in many ways - at least for a certain set of users - even if it's using the same amount of RAM.

BL rc2 uses slightly less RAM, almost half the disk space, is faster to download and install, is easier to install, has better default touchpad settings, is a lot more pleasing visually OOTB and, IMO, is a more integrated and complete desktop experience. BL kicks jessie Live's butt.
BTW, it's only been a year and week since the announcement of the end of CrunchBang. What a year!
