Bash script created a file "yesterday"

I have a bash script (2 actually) using rsync to back up my files to 2 external HDDs, a 250GB drive and a 1TB drive.  I have been running them with very minor mods since 2012.  Usually if a new instrall or update, Debian sees the drives differently.  The drives are the same, fresh Deb installs sometimes renames them.

This afternoon I did a backup to both drives, a sample:

 2026·11·01 @ 13:46:55 ~
   $ s11bk
    Syncing /home
      to /media/sector11/disk/S11-Nov/
    Syncing /media/5/
      to /media/sector11/disk/M5/
    Syncing /media/10/
      to /media/sector11/disk/M10/
    Syncing /media/11/
      to /media/sector11/disk/M11/

M10  S11-Nov		  bookmarks.html	 scrot_conky.png
M11  Sector11-readme.txt  config.openbox.my.old  up2.lillydog.usblive.txt
M5   backup.ROOt.txt	  d11-root

 2026·11·01 @ 14:49:23 ~
   $

home get's a fresh one monthly.  Today I wiped 3; - S11-Aug, S11-Sep, S11-Oct.

And I see something STRANGE - I'm being haunted by Halloween, note the date and times in the command lines in the code box above.

Now let's look at the drives, they were BOTH backed up:

These two were created TODAY!

WHY DO THEY HAVE YESTERDAY'S DATE?

BUT "stat" does not lie:

Re: Bash script created a file "yesterday"

Argentina do the Daylight Saving Time shuffle?
You run that backup script before the computer clock could sync?

You must unlearn what you have learned.

1st Q: Well, if it did, which it doesn't, that doesn't explain the correct time and date in the terminal or the "stat" view.

2nd Q: I was up at ±09:00, so 3 plus hours before running the script.

NOTE: Only once did Argentina change it's time in the last 27 years.  People rebelled!

Re: Bash script created a file "yesterday"

Did a test .... made a test script: Oct31

#!/bin/bash
## 12 Jan 2012
## 23 Feb 2012 changed to 'rsync' from 'cp'

MON=%b
TARGET="/media/5/TEST-$(date +"$MON")"

echo "    Syncing ~/SOX"
echo "      to $TARGET/"
  rsync -avh --progress /home/sector11/SOX > "/dev/null" "$TARGET"

# echo ""
# ls -l /media/5/OCT-"$TARGET"/
# echo ""
# stat /home/sector11/OCT-"$TARGET"/SOX

exit

and it worked perfect:

 2026·11·01 @ 18:36:55 ~
   $ Oct31
    Syncing ~/SOX
      to /media/5/TEST-Nov/

 2026·11·01 @ 18:37:03 ~
   $ stat /media/5/TEST-Nov
  File: /media/5/TEST-Nov
