Create a base desktop, the first step is the ISO installation.
I have an Intel laptop, a very entry-level Ideapad with a touchpad and no ethernet. On it I have my main partitions, boot, OS and swap, and I've created an empty partition via the awesome BL-carbon LIVE release on a USB. I'm installing the stable (trixie) amd64 image from the torrent link...
https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/cu … d64/bt-cd/
debian-13.7.0-amd64-netinst.iso.torrent
During install I configure WiFi, set the root password empty (leave it blank), during the partitioning I use an ext4 partiton I've already created, sure you can format it installer, mount to /, finish, leave swap untouched. You can fix that later if needed, just copy the swap line from the host /etc/fstab to the new /etc/fstab you're using.
At Select desktop softwate, uncheck "Debian desktop environment" and "GNOME", leave standard utilities checked and continue.
Reboot to the TTY, login and run 'sudo -i' to become root.
My laptop is WiFi only, so I have to bring the network up here.
ip aLists a bunch of gibberish that includes the NAME of my WiFi device.
ip link set wlp0s20f3 upYour device might be named differently than wlp0s20f3, so use the right name instead. But this gives me an error, my laptop is in airplane mode. I have to click the Fn7/airplane key twice and wait a few seconds, then run the ip link command again. Now verify it's working by running 'apt update'.
If everything works as planned, you can exit root by entering 'exit'. Install pkexec and reboot...
sudo apt install pkexec && systemctl rebootI'm taking a break, more in a bit.

Get rid of the second panel at the bottom by right-clicking either panel>Panel>Panel Preferences, switch the top entry from Panel 1 to 2 and click the minus symbol, confirm and exit.
If you're on WiFi like I am you have to fix /etc/networks/interfaces with 'sudo nano', comment out everything under #Primary interface (don't delete it, it can save your ass to have it) and reboot, now you should be able to connect to your network from the panel applet.
I think that's all correct, I'll reinstall now to check. See ya...
Other than a typo in one package and forgetting to include firefox and nm-applet it's all good, a very minimal labwc session. I'm installing xfce4-screenshooter because pic or it didn't happen. Adwaita icons in the scrot because we haven't themed anything yet, and you can see that I haven't connected to my WiFi network.
I'll add more stuff after another break. Please post if you try this HowTo and it fails.

Time for some theming. Download my OB theme, hhh-blueBlack
https://github.com/hhhorb/bunsen-extras … s/main.zip...
Extract it, exctract the blueBlack zip inside and move the hhh-blueBlack folder to ~/.local/share/themes (create that folder). Logout/login.
From the applications menu in the toolbar, open 'Labwc Tweaks' under Settings. Set the labwc theme to blueBlack and the icons to Papirus-Dark, and enable shadows if you like. To theme the terminal open its Preferences, pick DejaVu Sans Mono and under Colors set "Use system theme colors for text and background." To theme gtk, go to the app menu and choose Settings>GTK theme and set your theme to adwaita-dark, icons to Papirus Dark, Color Scheme to Prefer Dark and set your font, I'm using DejaVu Sans Book for now. Apply and close.
BTW, Super+Enter opens a terminal, Alt+F4 closes a window, Super+d shows hides all running apps and shows the desktop.
We still have no sound. Pipewire and Wireplumber are next after the break.

There's an error created by the empty 'core' property in our ~/.config/labwc/rc.xml
For now, delete this section...

<icon>Papirus-Dark</icon>

I said we'd do thunar.
sudo nala install --no-install-recommends thunarsudo nala install thunar-archive-plugin tumblerAdjust your rc.xml with an appropiate keybind. Maybe use W-f for thunar and assign 'nauilus -w" to W-A-f or something. Reconfigure labwc from the mouse-click menu (labwc root-menu).

If anyone wants to chime in here about the best commands to run for creating the thunar custom-actions "Open folder as root" and "Open as root" (to open a text file in pluma), that would be great.
The damn AI robot nailed it...
1. Open Thunar, then go to Edit ➔ Configure custom actions...
2. Click the + (plus) button to create a new action.
3. Under the Basic tab, fill out the following:
• Name: Open Folder as Root
• Command: thunar admin://%f
4. Switch to the Appearance Conditions tab:
• File Pattern: *
• Appears if selection contains: Check Directories only.
5. Click OK to save.
Let's see if it gets the editor right... eh, yessir. Add this but choose Text Files instead of Directories and name it "Open File as Root...

Please move this if you feel it disrupts your tutorial. ![]()
1.Firstly, it seems contradictory to me in this immediately following phase to execute apt upgrade and cause it to keep 'old' packages, only to then remove them with apt full-upgrade.
2.I'm stuck on system localization.
Here's an example from my last two installations: noctalia+niri and noctalia+labwc.
While during this phase I manually changed the sources with niri and the kernel from siduction, in labwc the source changes were done by apt's normalize sources and the kernel remained from debian/sid.
Naturally, at the beginning of the installations, the localization was set to de_DE-UTF8 and no other was selected!
Nevertheless, I've found that everything is correct in niri, but in labwc, the German setting is only correct in the noctalia shell. In Thunar, xfce4-terminal, mousepad, etc., it stubbornly refuses to change, even though all configuration files contain the opposite setting.
I will elaborate on this further this afternoon in the relevant thread 'noctalia+labwc'.
