I went to college in 1968 and this was on the jukebox in a nearby pub. Just blew me away.

I graduated high school in 1981 at age 16 (gifted program, skipped eighth grade, total failure for the last 20 years, as was the case with many "gifted" late boomers/early Gen Xers). I didn't realize we were that far apart in age. You might have been a legitimate hippie, I am a neo-hippie.

I'm sure I've posted this story before, and I've never fully fact checked it, but Bowie had the whole album pretty much recorded except for lead guitar, hired Stevie who he had heard somewhere, Stevie came in and laid down Albert King leads in basically one take, went on tour with Bowie, then left the tour and formed Double Trouble.

In Amsterdam (~1974?), at a party a friend came up and said "I don't think you're a real hippie".
A) I never made any such claim to anyone, it was just an impression he'd got somehow.
B) What's a "real hippie" anyway?
He apologized later, but there was nothing to apologize for.

Anyway just to prove him right/wrong, the following spring I went overland to India, stayed ~6 months, then on to Japan in 1976, where I still am.

(BTW Japan has a very strict anti-drug policy.)

I don't know how school works over there. Over here if you're born past a certain date you defer for a year (start at 6 instead of 5). So, for all I know you were botn at the wrong end of 64. In which case: Boomer

^Feel like I missed the Real Thing by a year or two. 1967 was the time to be hanging out in London. Had a dose of Imposter Syndrome for the ensuing couple of decades... but it might equally have been a narrow escape considering what happened to a lot of those people.

I came right at the end of it. I started college in 1969. I remember walking down Peachtree St in Atlanta and it was like a bazaar, literally crawling with the counterculture. An older hippy tried to sell me a bag of weed, and a policeman showed up out of nowhere. I thought it was going to be a big stink, but the policeman just told him to bug off.

Within a year or two, that had all been cleaned up.

@MarkW, I meant that the hippie movement (not the punk movement) was pretty much over in the U.S. soon after the U.S. military pulled out of Vietnam in '73.

You know way more about punk than I do. At the time, starting maybe in late '80, I was only listening to punk via The Police's first two albums, which were half punk/half reggae, and The Clash who had already put out the heavily reggae influenced album Sandinista. If people even consider The Police and later Clash as punk, I think it's agreed that they were the two artsy-fartsiest punk bands ever.
