The '80s is where the stage show of vocalist and a band with 3 backup singers and maybe a horn section was solidified. Brian Palmer, Stevie Windwood, Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, David Bowie, Michael McDonald, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner... I'm sure there are dozens of others.

Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel (a.k.a. Melt, 1980)

Gabriel hired Phil Collins and Jerry Marotta to play drums (in addition to his own drum programming) on this, his third solo album, and literally banned them from playing cymbals or hi-hats. I don't think there are any cymbals or hi-hats on any solo Gabriel tracks until So (1987, Manu Katché was not to be denied his cymbals). Check it out... Solsbury Hill, a shaker, no cymbals or hi-hat. Games Without Frontiers, there's an electronic tambourine, no cymbals or hi-hat.

If anyone here speaks German, I'd love a translation of the lyrics to 'Frag Mich Nicht Immer/I Cant Remember" to compare them with the English version. For example "Not One of Us" gets translated to Du Bist Nicht Wie Wir (You Are Not Like Us"). Huh, does German not have contractions? No wonder Arnold wanted the Terminator to say "I will be back." Arnold had trouble saying "I'll" and argued that a cyborg wouldn't use contractions. I think I read that Cameron replied with something like "Arnold, I write the lines and you say them."

-edit- I remember that the German version of Games Without Frontiers got some radio play in Boston, Massachusetts in the early '80s. Boston had some great radio stations back then. Anyway, Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel is mandatory listening for any music fan, either in English or German.
