Ugg, that album is insufferable, everything wrong with prog-rock. Long, boring, pointless, insufferable. His first album from a few years earlier is so much better.

If a minute twent-eight into The Tell-Tale Heart doesn't do it for you, you're officially dead inside. And the next track, The Cask of Amitillado, a freaking Queen Disney soundtrack. Stereo, alternating french horns (Beatles, Eleanor Rigby, horns instead of string quartett). (The System of) Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether is insane.

I forgot, a bunch of the second side is orchestral, very Maurice Ravel, with some Toto and Tubular Bells mixed in. The last track is pure Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett era. Great vocals.

I can only think of one prog-rock album that can follow that, Imaginary Voyage by Jean-Luc Ponty (Daryl Steurmer, guitar, 1976. The guitar playing on this is sublime.)

I can assure you, the parts on that first tune, especially the intro and outro, are much easier on violin than on guitar. Daryl is playing his ass off. He shreds this whole album. Jean-Luc comes through, too, phase shifter, chorus, flanger and all. His solo at the end of Gardens of Babylon is pretty perfect, not to mention a great song he wrote. Superb drum and bass, it's pretty fucking good. A bass player's dream, those sweeping lines. Tarantula is one of the better wah guitar solos out there, and the sickest fiddle playing.

An album where gapless playback is needed. A minute and thirty four, after playing when of the most incredible fiddle licks ever, Ponty launches into a twenty-six-ish second free-form melody. Awesome!

I heard Magnepans at a dedicated listening room (components set up, ready to swapped in or out) in a high end hi-fi store in Minneapolis in the late '90s driven by a pair of tube amps, best speakers I've ever heard other than the main speakers at Studio B, Paisley Park Studios. With the Magnepans, you'd never leave the chair, you'd just listen to Love Over Gold or something on repeat until you died of dehydration in a few weeks. Boy, my 2 inch TV speakers aren't cutting it. I'm putting the cans on.
