Ok, a bit of good news.
He tried the live version with the noacpi option, and it worked!
But then he sent me this picture:
I guess it's the nvidia card acting up?
In any case, at least now it shows something.

For NVIDIA cards, one of these two parameters may be needed:
nomodeset
nomodeset nouveau.modeset=0

Ok, I just talked with my coworker, and somehow he got Ubuntu up and running.
I can't be sure what he did, because he doesn't know. He just started tinkering with it. All he can remember is he got a message saying there was a conflict between three drivers: two proprietary nvidia ones and a generic one. He chose to run one of the proprietary drivers, and everything started running perfectly.
And he's already showing the first symptoms of the "Linux fan syndrome". ]:D ]:D ]:D
