BL and Windows 10 / UEFI / Secure Boot

Hi All,

I think I've found enough from searching the forum to answer this, but still don't quite understand enough about it to be sure.

I'm about to buy a new machine (Asus K31BF) with Windows 10 pre-installed. I have to be sure I can install BL, as it is my usual OS, or I won't buy it.

I realise I need to disable Secure Boot and use legacy/CSM mode, but am reading that some Windows 10 machines won't allow Secure Boot to be disabled. If this is the case, will I still be able to install BL? Am I confusing two different issues? I just need some reassurance, before I pull the trigger!

If I can work around it, I can sort out how to do it when (if) it arrives, so don't worry about going into too much detail. :-)

Thanks,

Dinks

P.S. Big thanks to the BL team!

Re: BL and Windows 10 / UEFI / Secure Boot

It should be possible to install BunsenLabs alongside Windows 10 with BL booted in UEFI mode and Secure Boot enabled.

Unfortunately, at the moment it is only possible to directly install BunsenLabs in UEFI mode by using a Debian jessie netinstall ISO image [1] to install a very minimal (non-X) system and then download and run johnraff's script to install the BunsenLabs desktop.

See https://github.com/BunsenLabs/bunsen-netinstall

Alternatively, you can install using the BunsenLabs ISO image and then convert the system to UEFI after installation.

See the links in my signature for more and feel free to ask more questions -- the Secure Boot instructions are still in the development stage so it would be great if you could test them.

Thanks very much indeed.

That all sounds positive. I'll happily test the SecureBoot instructions and report back.

Be absolutely sure that you do not format or delete any files in your EFI system partition so as not to damage your Windows installation.

The EFI system partition will be the only FAT-formatted partition on your drive and will be marked as "ESP" in gparted

Your Windows system boots from the /Microsoft directory on that partition and this must be left untouched.
