Carbon won't draw screen elements

I've been using BL in a kvm on proxmox for a while now, maybe ten years or so (I started with #! on real hardware). Anyhoo I'm having this issue that's difficult for me to describe.

I installed carbon fresh but it is having trouble redrawing the screen. Sometimes the panel appears to be missing. The terminal window appears, but the text doesn't display. If I right-click hover the mouse over an item, it does not highlight the selection. Firefox does not appear although if I right-click, from what appears in the right-click menu, it's clear that it is running (of course the process list shows it's running..)

I can limp along in the terminal by typing something, then switching to the 2nd desktop and switching back to draw the text.

I'm not sure how to debug this because I'm unsure what to search for. My ai suggests it may be picom related. I've tried all the display options for proxmox and they seem to all fare the same. I'm using novnc in the proxmox web gui at the moment.

Of course my boron and prior machines never experienced this issue..

Could anyone help point the way for me? Thank you!

This sounds like the picom/3d acceleration issue.
Try turning off composition - if that fixes it, then you have to enable 3d acceleration, live without picom, or use compton instead (no round corners).
