Anyone out there using devuan?

(I think I wrote all of this once already, but had a browser glitch when I moved the computer).

Anyway, I've been using devuan daedalus with the bunsenlabs repository.

Recently I tried to install the new "Excalibur" distribution, both in Devuan's version and the refracta version, and things didn't work very well. It often came up without graphical driver support, sound support, or network card support, or all three, and the 640x480 screen was too small to be able to tell what the installer was saying was the next step.

Do any of y'all know if there's a working version of excalibur out there that will work with the screen and the sound and network out-of-the-box? I went back to daedalus and was only able to get things working because I was able to briefly plug into the internet via eithernet at the office. (Oh, and also installed pulseaudio instead of pipewire. I think.)

I keep feeling like I'm doing something wrong. Anyone out there have any suggestions?

^Here, @ceeslans runs ‘devuan’ with fluxbox very successfully. Maybe you should contact him.  wink

Re: Anyone out there using devuan?

OP Trixie has a lot of issues, and Devuan excalibur shares about 95% of those same issues, it can be tough right now. I'm trying to help iron some of them out, but for right now i'm sticking with daedalus.

That being said I made some testing isos over the last year for Excalibur using the Mate desktop, just a "mini" without a lot of programs, upgraded from a net install of daedalus last year. Last updated iso I uploaded on Sept 1st, so likely a LOT of updates straight off the bat, but it is a hybrid iso so you can test live first and maybe work out any issues. Perhaps it might help you.

Re: Anyone out there using devuan?

Well, I went back to daedalus, got everything installed, but just stuck with

"deb https://pkg.bunsenlabs.org/debian boron main"

for sourcing the bunsenlabs bit and then upgraded some parts to excalibur. So I'm back to a frankenstein system, but a sort of working frankenstein, where I've done some of the Things You're Not Supposed To Be Doing With Debian/Devuan/Etc. If there's a repository I'm supposed to be using instead for the bunsen stuff, let me know.

I'm hoping to get stuff together where I could get a newer-ish used computer off of ebay or an older-but-working-better computer for messing about with distributions but I went and paid a bunch of bills during this pay period and now I'm broke.

One thing I want to be able to do is make sure the computer will be able to handle dragonfly bsd because I want to try that again at one point in the future.

Anyway, thanks! I may try the ISO sometime next week.

Oh, one more thing: strawberry doesn't seem to work well and the current edition wants to mainly function with a bright background, which bugs me because I mainly use it to llsten while I sleep. So I'm winding up going back to clementine, which is kinda old.

Thanks for everything.

Last month I just switched over to Trixie XFCE on all my main boxes. Yes there are issues but so far nothing that causes me any serious problems. I installed Excalibur yesterday and will work on any issues I find as the weeks go by though Devuan will never be my main system. I don't hate systemd. Right now I am eagerly waiting for Carbon to drop.
