"Bumping" a thread, and a bit off-topic... but I'd love to try out CDE - the Common Desktop Environment - in Linux.

Aeons ago, back in 1997, when I started working, we had AIX UNIX, which came with CDE.

We received a Windows virus once. I still remember double-clicking the file, but nothing happened of course. That was funny.

CDE  became open source, I read (sourceforge.net/projects/cdesktopenv/ - Would I be able to get it to run, I wonder.)

UNIX with Common Desktop Environment. Now, that brings back memories.

Ohh yes good ol' CDE and I remember that well too as managed many AIX (and some HP) servers and workstations back around that same time frame. Thinking of playing with it myself as loved the retro Motif look as well.

One tool I liked on AIX that's not on Linux and it's Smit/Smitty.

It's not terribly practical, as I recall, unless you're a big fan of grouping applications. And getting a panel to work with it is a royal pain in the arse, again IIRC.

Try awesomewm instead.
