I actually switched rounded corners off in Picom. Those are part of the theme. The only thing Picom is doing is drop shadows. It doesn't seem to affect opacity in IceWM. Or at least I don't know how to make it do that

It is currently a personal preference to place it this way. And I must say that it works very well ergonomically and efficiently.

You should. Xfce4-wayland is a nice set up. Not as polished as Gnome or Plasma, but then again it doesn't chew up the system resources either.
