[SOLVED] ISO checksum + ISO filesize?

Greetings to all,

Having discovered #! (Crunchbang) too late, and planning to try out Bunsenlabs, I got the ISO through Transmission (and that's in Linux Mint, if anyone's curious), but I am having three... well, "issues".

1. When downloading an ISO, a Checksum is "usually" offered. However, at the download-page I don't see a Checksum.

User vate gave two Checksums at this forum page, but when I do an md5sum of the "Hydrogen" ISO, then I get a different Checksum. I downloaded the 32-bit ISO twice and both downloaded files ISO files gave the same Checksum. I assume those Checksums by vate last month December are incorrect(?).

2. The download page says to "Place the file containing the checksums in the same directory as your ISO file downloads, and then run in a terminal sha256sum --check $CHECKSUM-FILE. Make sure to pass the name of the *.sha256sum.txt file, and not the ISO file!".
Could someone elaborate on what exactly I am supposed to do?

3. The download page says the 32-bit ISO is 879 MB. The downloaded ISO that I get (both of them; see 1.) however is 921,7 MB...

--
It is probably me, but... what am I missing or doing wrong?

--
I tried Crunchbang only a couple of months ago and I liked it, so I thought I'd try Bunsenlabs. However I seem to have these few aforementioned issues... Any feedback would be very appreciated - thank you.

Download Page wrote:

ISO file                                    Size     .torrent    DDL    sha256
bl-Hydrogen-rc1-amd64.iso    825M    ■             ■            ■
bl-Hydrogen-rc1-i386.iso        879M    ■             ■            ■

Click on the icon for appropriate version of the sha256 checksum file

2. The download page says to "Place the file containing the checksums in the same directory as your ISO file downloads, and then run in a terminal sha256sum --check $CHECKSUM-FILE. Make sure to pass the name of the *.sha256sum.txt file, and not the ISO file!".

The checksum file will be called eg: "bl-Hydrogen-rc1-i386.iso.sha256sum.txt". Save it to the same directory as the iso, and in a terminal, cd to that directory and run

 sha256sum --check $CHECKSUM-FILE

where $CHECKSUM_FILE is the name of the checksum .txt file.

You need to have `sha256sum` installed. ( BTW `transmission-gtk` is in the BL iso wink )

Re: [SOLVED] ISO checksum + ISO filesize?

Owwwwwwwww, dang.

Sometimes I am astonished by my own "stupidity".

@damo,
Thank you for your time and trouble to enlighten me - much obliged!

In my 8 years of GNU/Linux (a lot more, if I count SUSE and Mandrake along, back in prehistoric days), I have not come across sha256sum's, hence my question in "2.").

However... and there always seems to be a "however". I am running Mint "rebecca" (among others) at my main machine, and I get a different sha256sum result (that being, and it is long, one that starts with 8be64400da-etc-etc) than the one in the .txt file at the download page. This with both ISO's that I got via Transmission.

-oo-

Alright, I downloaded the ISO again, this time from the BS server directly - but now I get yet another sha256sum result than the one at the download page (starting with dee4d179e61-etc-etc).

I got the correct, 32-bit version. And I tried all three ISO's that I downloaded (into different folders).

At the risk of again sounding stupid - what is going on/wrong?

Seems that in Mint it is 'sha256sum CHECKSUM-FILE' (without the '--check $'). Still, same result: the ISO from the server gives me: dee4d179e-et-etc neutral

And, odd, but all three ISO's have the same file size - 921,7 MB instead of 879 MB as mentioned on the download page.

No need to get hung up on this issue. The checksum is only there for DDL downloads. Just use a BitTorrent client like Transmission, BitTorrent has it's own validation protocol. If the file(s) successfully download then you're assured a valid ISO.

I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

@hhh,
Ah, alrighty, then smile

(But if checksums are not 100% certain, kind of, then it is very confusing - just look at me going on about this.).

I will give it a try at this old machine I now have #! on, and report my experience.
