I get this
$ dpkg -l | grep Brother
ii brscan2 0.2.5-1 amd64 Brother Scanner Driver
ii mfc3360ccupswrapper:i386 1.0.1-1 i386 Brother CUPS Inkjet Printer Definitions
ii mfc3360clpr:i386 1.0.1-1 i386 Brother lpr Inkjet Printer Definitions
I did
$ sudo ln -s /etc/init.d/cupsys /etc/init.d/lpd
per instructions
so I know the scanner is there. It shows up as a printer fine. I can run another networked scanner, so I know xsane is working okay. Somehow xsane does not see the scanner. Any ideas? Thanks.

From the command line does sane recognize the scanner:
scanimage -L
If it does you can test it by scanning from the command line:
scanimage --format=png --output-file test.png --progress

Solved.
Thanks to you. The arch instructions added the ipp-usb package. The scanner now appears in the list of devices. Thanks very much!

Luckily ipp-usb is a Recommends of bunsen-meta-printer-support so installing that package with recommends (the default) should see most users OK.
But @trilobite thanks for the reminder.
