Re: What are you listening to right now?

^Peel took dry humour to new heights. He was from Mersyside, don't know if that has anything to do with it. A trailblazer at a time when DJs were supposed to shout enthusiastically about everything.
Sadly passed away in 2004 - too soon.

(There are a lot of his radio shows on YouTube.)

Re: What are you listening to right now?

^ And since you mentioned Top Gear, and it has nothing to do with music but everything to do with listening, here's Jeremy's take on Lancia vs. Audi in the old rally days. One of the best auto segments ever produced...

Also, very British BBC commentary by Clarkson, for the win.

^ Disappointing. The sound drops out for the last ten seconds of that clip.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Wait, I thought I had posted me listening to the best, artsy-fartsiest punk/world-music album of all time. I didn't post the best, artsy-fartsiest punk/world-music album of all time?

The Clash - Sandanista (1980)

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Archetypical Canterbury scene band:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LB6_GlptvPY
Kevin Ayers soon split off to do his own (not bad) thing. Related would be people like Soft Machine and Caravan.

I saw Gong at the Melkveg in Amsterdam ~1974 or so. They were quite good as I recall. Steve Hillage was a great guitarist (probably still is).

Still on a British Psychedelia binge, here's Jethro Tull in 1969:

They were already pretty tight by this time, and I think I really preferred their earlier folkier stuff. Likewise for Tyrannosaurus Rex for that matter.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

More Canterbury Scene, maybe.
Back in the day I was rather fond of this album "The Polite Force" by a band called Egg. Clean sound, unusual time signatures, unpretentious lyrics.
Here's "A Visit to Newport Hospital":

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Not British but this tune followed the last one on a mixed cassette I once made. Nice transition I think.
Part of Music For Electric Violin And Low Budget Orchestra by Jean Luc Ponty, music by Frank Zappa. This section is a recycling  of Idiot Bastard Son Duke of Prunes:

And very nice it is too.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

^ Jean-Luc Ponty - Cosmic Messenger (1978)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNUQBBM … GM7w%3D%3D

Jean-Luc Ponty, George Duke and Frank Zappa, maybe the greatest fusion jam of all time, Fifty-Fifty (1973? 1973. Zappa's seventeenth album, Over-Nite Sensation)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgSE2Q4qfM8

Duke and Ponty lay down world-class solos, and then Zappa lays down the densest guitar track ever recorded.

Densest? Most dense? I don't know. It's pretty sick, though. Ants in my pants.

Elton John - Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. Haven't heard some of these songs for ages and it's nice to hear them again.

Yes, nice Audacious / WinAmp nostalgia. But Audacious can also look like this:

And to be on topic:

Khruangbin - A La Sala

I just love it.
