Re: Firefox - New Terms of Service

One thing I haven't said is that, I moved to LibreWolf quite some time ago smile Probably 10-12 months ago, so my move wasn't in reaction to the recent Mozilla-isms.

To be honest, Mozilla should have seen the writing on the wall, the whole world has known for a very long time that both Google and MS are evil.  They have been poorly mismanaged by the wrong people and I believe there would have been behind closed door deals.

Everybody was invited to try it while using Google's search engine. And then there was Android with Chrome installed out of the box

Don't get me started on Android smile But again, Firefox seemed to do nothing to fight this, hence my comment about releasing a whole ton of developers, twice.

I know for a fact the FF is superior to Chrome, but for most it's too much hassle to change to a new browser.  Especially those who use the Google suite, that everyonce in a while becomes unstable on FF ... I wonder why, can't be Google playing dirty tricks? No....no, not at all....*Borat Not!

Maybe I'm to pesimistic, but I'm not sure that anyone else will step in if Mozilla is gone or becomes completely insignificant. As long as it exists it can change for better. When it's gone it's gone

I believe there will be a group who step up, there are a lot of passionate FF fanboys out there.

Firefox/Mozilla has been a complete disaster for far too long and now it's possibly far too late to turn the tide.

Anyway, as you say, time will tell smile

I have two computers, this one I am using as we speak, it runs Gentoo and I use LibreWolf, I only have one browser installed. The other a MacBook, I just use Safari with that with NextDNS and Adguard Pro.

Re: Firefox - New Terms of Service

History of web browsers popularity.

Interesting. I thought that the old Opera was a bit more popular at its peak. It also reminded me that Chrome was for some time in the beta stage and it took it a while to start gaining popularity rapidily (Android was a game changer). And where the hell is pre-Firefox Mozilla?

Mentions Phoenix/Firebird approx 3:10. An interesting video to watch.

Re: Firefox - New Terms of Service

Wasn't there a Mozilla Internet Suite before Phoenix/Firebird? I think SeaMonkey is based on that project.

The video clearly shows who's the biggest loser and it's... Microsoft. How did they manage to go from a position of a total dominance to not having their own browser engine at all is beyond my understanding. They had everything - money, talent and the most popular system on Earth. I just don't get it.

Re: Firefox - New Terms of Service

I think they did, SeaMonkey. I tried using it, but yeah, not for me.

MS are literally there simply because there has never been a company that has managed to get something working as it should with Linux. Imagine the world we would live in if Linux was so widely adopted as Windows.

Win11 is a complete nightmare now though.

Re: Firefox - New Terms of Service

Stumbled across this today, blog post from back at the first of the month from Mint, am wondering if users of FF-ESR are having any issues since the 14th?

https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=4811

On March 14, 2025, a root certificate used by Firefox will expire.

When this happen, Firefox version 128 (and lower) will suffer significant issues related to:

configuration
add-ons
signed content
DRM-protected media playback
To avoid these problems, make sure you’re up to date in your Update Manager. Press Refresh and apply all updates.

This is important for security reasons, and in this case it’s also important to avoid regressions.

Firefox 135.0.1 is available on all supported Linux Mint releases.

Not sure if Mozilla would provide instructions to update the cert for those older versions. Paraphrased from Mozilla's site: Firefox ESR versions earlier than ESR 115.13 are affected.

Re: Firefox - New Terms of Service

The root certificate issue doesn't apply to the Debian binary, which gets the necessary upgrades (provided users remember to keep their systems apt-updated). Nor does it apply to those whose binary installed directly from Mozilla auto-updates itself. That leaves a rather small group of people who need to look into it.
