Mysterious Loss of Internet Connection

Hello,

Long time crunchbang user here. Just switched to Bunsen and the new forums!

I have no Internet connection at home and I'm hoping someone here can identify the problem / if it is a software problem. This is really mysterious to me so I will lay out the full history of the problem.

Background: I am a student and I live with two roommates.

1. The router initially appears to poop out. I was connected with a long Ethernet cable, so I move my cable from the router to the modem, and the connection is fine for the next two days until we all leave for break.

2. We returned from break today, and my roommate brings two new routers. They both do not work. We also try a 5-port Linksys Ethernet switch. When my roommate who is using Windows connects to the switch, he has internet access and I do not. As a sanity check, I connected directly to the modem again and this time I have no connection. I tried this with my desktop and my netbook (running Bunsen and Crunchbang Waldorf respectively) and while running off of a live-USB. My roommate is broadcasting wifi from his laptop, which is how I am connected now.

Is there any possibility this is an issue with Linux? And if so, how can it be resolved? Thank you.

EDIT: after much power-cycling, everything works again. wtf.
