Today was the day I learnt of ExGent! Thanks for the link, I will save that for another day.

I'm glad I did it the traditional way, it's real sense of satisfaction.

I just skimmed through their officials documentation, and it seems like stage1 and stage2 are now used for development only. I could swear there were nice user docs last time I installed Gentoo on my home machine (2007-2008).

I noticed that too when I checked them out after @Dobbie03 posted his screenshots. I was thinking the Gentoo Handbook was more user friendly ~10 years ago.

Still updating at the moment. I've just updated OpenSUSE Leap 15.5, probably for the last time at it reached its end of life date today (31st December). After today you're advised to upgrade to Leap 15.6.

I've now installed Exton's spin on Fedora 41 (Defender). It's working well except that as is usual with Exton's spins it comes with the bare minimum of installed software so you have to add in a lot of extra software (it doesn't even come with an office suite).

I've also installed IceWM as the main window manager I find that works better with Fedora than Gnome does (or maybe I just don't like Gnome).

Glad to see I'm in good company! Google Earth runs very well in it too, much better than it does in XOrg, because it has Wayland installed as standard (the same goes for Nobara, which is also based on Fedora).

Just installed the latest version of ExTix (24.12), which is based on Ubuntu 24.10. It's working reasonably well so far except that I couldn't get Opera 114 to install for some reason.

Wow, just spent an hour and half or so trouble shooting as to why my kernel wouldn't update to the latest version and why I couldn't see the kernel in /boot/efi etc etc etc in Gentoo.

Turns out a tool called "installkernel" that is meant to automatically update the configs for efistub in fact did not automatically update anything. Removed it, rebuilt the kernel, followed usual steps to update and BOOM!

Kernel 6.12.9 booting by default.

I've just downloaded the latest version of DebEX, Exton's spin on the forthcoming version of Debian (Trixie) and with KDE as standard, and am running it in RAM. Although I haven't installed it yet it all seems to be working OK.

[Edit: the installation went well too. I had to enable the OS prober in Grub to bring back the full range of installed distros onto the bootup menu though.]
