Printer not printing
Hi,
I am using a Brother HL-L2340DW which always has printed flawlessly on BL. However, I recently had to do a completely fresh install due to issues with one of my sons messing up nearly everything.
Once I had done the fresh install, including the official drivers from Brother, the printer stopped working. Its status shows as "receiving data", but it never prints. The longest I have waited to see if it would work was well over an hour, and even if I disconnect the printer (I use USB), it continues to show that it is receiving data without printing.
Today, for the first time, I received an error message from the print queue, ran the troubleshooter, and received the following very long report, with the message that there seeemed to be no solution:

Brother support are doing their best to help, but we are getting nowhere fast, although they have not yet responded to this troubleshooting report. In any case, suggestions for resolving the issue would be appreciated.

In a terminal, does:
lpstat -eshow your printer?
If so, can you print directly with:
lpr -P "Printer" file_namesubstitute the name of your printer for 'Printer" and use a text or pdf file for the test.

Yes, it shows my printer.

If so, can you print directly with:
lpr -P "Printer" file_namesubstitute the name of your printer for 'Printer" and use a text or pdf file for the test.
This did not work: the printer shows that it is receiving data, but does not print. It even shows that it is receiving data when unplugged from the computer.
I suspect that Brother are incorrect, and that there is something wrong with the printer, though it is not the drum or toner cartridge and the printer's hardwaare testing feature shows "no repairable problem". There is no indication as to whether or not there is a non-repairable problem(!).
As I said in the original post, Brother support are convinced that the problem is software based, not the printer itself, but I am beginning to think that the only solution is to buy another printer and see what happens.

You have 2 entries for one printer?
When that happens with my HP, I have to go into the cups web interface and delete both printers. Then add the printer again - give it a new name. I assume that your specific printer will be available since you installed the official Brother drivers.
only solution is to buy another printer and see what happens.
Do you happen to have another computer you can use to the test the printer?
Has Brother support had you try anything, or are they just going with "it's the software"?

The "HL-L2340D-series" printer is the auto-detected version , using the default debian versions of the drivers, which are installed, as far as I know, on installation.of the distro, but certainly when "printer support is installed.The companies own drivers are, apparently, in the process of being depreciated. (Windows is, in fact, in the process of doing the same thing. Is linux finally turning into windows? ---A poor joke on my part.)
Apparently this is quite a well known problem, so Brother have been taking me through the various known fixes. That it is well known, and that there are known fixes, seem to be at the base of the notion that it is software.
The cups web interface always has refused to let me change or delete anything. I should sort out the permissions some day, but I am currently not able to change anything using that interface.
I may be able to organise a windows box to find out.

Usually you just have to go to http://localhost:631/ and click administration. You can't use sudo for the username and password, you need to be an actual administrator. Normally, I just use root and the password. If root doesn't have a password on your computer, you can create one.

Can you uninstall the Brother drivers, then use the drivers provided by cups?

I just added myself to the SystemGroup lpadmin, which solved the problem, and I can now use my sudo credentials to perform admin tasks.

Can you uninstall the Brother drivers, then use the drivers provided by cups?

The issue began while using the automatically installed "brlaser"... I have, in any case, on previous installations, had both present, and both working, although I suppose something could have changed in the meantime.
I think what I will do is remove the auto-detected printer and uninstall brlaser, and see what is happening when I do tht.
