I'm using Firefox 131.0.2 and noticed this in settings:
Fortunately, this time it is not enabled by default.
Here you can follow the discussion that has been going on for a long time:

My settings remain as in the image above.
What do you think?

At the moment most user computers don't have the resources to run AI locally (eg via javascript), so it's a question of sending requests to a server and getting a response. Right now it's disabled by default, but of course that might change in the future.
Whether you trust Firefox not to send any data to OpenAI or whoever is the same question for any web service they might be able to connect to.

Thanks for the heads up @marens, and link. Will leave it off myself.

I have no need, nor have I ever asked for AI to be included in my browser. I'm glad I changed to LibreWolf, so far they have not included this unnecessary bloat.

"accelerating at an ever-increasing pace" sounds like something an AI would say

I don't know if it's the increasing use of that damn AI, or an increase in sponsored results, but I'm finding that the results I get from search engines nowadays seem a lot less relevant to my query than they used to. So many of the results bear no relation to what I type in. Anyone else getting the same?

Very much so. I find searches for solutions to issues increasingly frustrating.

Not just not relevant ones but malicious sites are starting to appear in searches as well so be alert to that as well.

^ ^ I always (if possible) try to make the search smarter by putting words in double quotes and specifying the search site.
Something like this:
"AI" site:forums.bunsenlabs.org

I do try to, but it's just finding the right balance between narrowing it down and not getting any results at all.

^ Of course.
It can be used without the double quotes, but this results in an expanded search with less relevant data.
It's good that we can specify the search site and thus prevent unpleasant surprises.
