Need assist - Display Manager / Defaults

Hi there.

I've managed to cuase bunsenlabs boron to default to sddm.

seems like kde / plasma mouse cursor after login but also at that poitn seems like USB wireless mouse/ key is no longer functional.

so i can't seem to edit this from within Bunsen.

i have it accessible however.

:EDIT:
NOTE -- IN AN ATTEMPT TO RECOVER the previous setting, I MODIFIED...
i did edit /etc/X11/default-display-manager

to lightdm , replacing where lightdm had been modified to sddm. that is, the resulting mod now pointing to lightdm.

that's the only mod i made (in attempt to recover)
:ENDEDIT:

that mod did not change the behavior in any way. i don't even recall why i was playing w/ that stuff at the moment. stupidty i guess. curiosity. haha

hoping to not have to continue to try diff things as it's requiring me to move an SSD in enclosure from PC to PC, one where it's the OS, one where i'm trying to do the editing.

thank you! best regards.
smile

Re: Need assist - Display Manager / Defaults

Did you install sddm, or did you install KDE and get sddm as a dependency?

seems like kde / plasma mouse cursor after login but also at that poitn seems like USB wireless mouse/ key is no longer functional.

So the mouse and keyboard are working at the display manager screen, but quit after logging in?

After your modification, do you boot to the sddm display manager or the lightdm display manager?

Re: Need assist - Display Manager / Defaults

sudo dpkg-reconfigure sddm

https://wiki.debian.org/DisplayManager# … ay_manager

To set a system-wide cursor theme...

sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme

I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

i believe so. something i was trying to get to installing. i'm afraid i will never remember that. i get going down a rabbit hole. maybe was trying to install Budgie? I honestly have no idea, but i do NOT think it was a specific choice to install KDE. I most likely was aware it was installing, and don't generally care so much. I know Wayland can cause problems. Who knows what i'm up to! (sorry...)

PackRat wrote:

i'm pretty sure the sddm was intentional for some reason.

Correct! Yes. It's the SDDM login screen w/ the username / icon. I don't know if you'e seen my other posts, but I use this setup on an HDTV, so that part of the boot process (incl i guess it's Systed scrolling up prior/ just after)... can never really "see" that part, to see all of it. display resolution/ aspect ration isn't corrected until i do so manually, after openbox loads andi use randr !

OH! Eureka! That's what it was!
My ARANDR stopped. working.
or something.
something was messed up.
i couldn't get the panel to work by default, and i didn't like the tint2 setup i made. ... and from there, i went off the rails. haha.

i noticed nothing remarkable in terms of changes after that manual change to ../x11/...file from lightdm to sddm (there's more to the line, i don't haev it to read it right here) burt you know what i mean im sure.
So yeah. nothing changed but i know there are several places one might need to make changes sometimes for the system to pick it up going around ENV Vars maybe/not set etc.

Thank you!!!!

not sure. can't do anything w/ it. i think it's actually crashing when the mouse /keyboard becomes disabled to be true.

To set a system-wide cursor theme...

sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme

not sure why?
does that affect the dm somehow?

Re: Need assist - Display Manager / Defaults

it's mostly, i just need to revert -- "hard coded" somewhere, to get the system to stop paying attention to my SDDM tomfoolery

i mean... can't be that much a mystery.
it's probably broken beyond any semblance of the distro i downloaded. not that i want it that way. i shouldn't have tried the testing. it really was doign well though. not sure what happened w/ the tint2 - something i was doing maybe.

it's not ./.bashrc
it's not ./.Xsession something...
i forget where all i looked, it being a few days ago.

In fact, I actually should know the solution. I did the same thing on Mx-Linux 23 ... quite similar, i know it was defaulting to SDDM, and the system didn't want to run like that. it was an easy fix, but the research was a needle in a haystack.

everyone thinks you want to logout into another desktop or something completely impractical. haha.

Re: Need assist - Display Manager / Defaults

Since your keyboard is working at the sddm screen, you can get to a console log in screen. At the sddm screen do:

Control-Alt-F2

That will drop you out to tty2, log in with your username. You will be looking at a command prompt.

From the command prompt you can either disable the sddm service or uninstall sddm.

Re: Need assist - Display Manager / Defaults

pretty sure i've tried that stuff as i've used pc w/ linux on the HDTV for abt 6 mo's now, as is. but i'll give it a go.

is there not a way to simply edit the correct conf w/out trying to run bunsen to do it?

why mess w/ that keyboard not working, and whether my TV is going to cooperated, etc. I can't see text when it's the "terminal" view (e.g. [ctrl]+[alt]... ). i can guess at what i'm typing there, but i don't find that approach to be quite effective

this is the relevant part.
that i can't see anything, and the keyboard doesn't work after "login" w/ the dm to make display mods. so. the suggested resolutions don't seem viable.

are there any other suggestions please?
i'm sorry if my texts aren't clear. not typical step and halfbroken kebd

Re: Need assist - Display Manager / Defaults

to be clear, i can never see the boot process or drop to tty via alt+ctrl+F#.
I can kind of see some of it, but it's not ideal. i should just say i can't see it but that's not entirely true.

So, nothing about SDDM affects that I can't see the boot process, or utilize the terminal outside of the dm as suggested. It's HDMI. i dunno how it works. i should say how it kind-of-works. old TV. old PC.
I will say the Laptop does NOT have the messed-up display like that if i use its HDMI out attached to the same HDTV.
So, I realize I probably should have emphasized that detail -- the PC attached to the TV via HDMI -- i think it's the oldest of the old of that tech, most likely. in any case, if i can tweak the xrandr and get a satisfactory viewport going, i feel like i'm winning!

@PackRat - thank you!
Unfortunately this solution doesn't work for my situation because I can't see what's on the terminal after an alt+ctrl+F2 type operation (anything outside of the dm, i suppose is essentially "out of bounds", or off screen).

It seems I'll need a solution which won't require use of that Bunsen system at all.

If I'm not sucessful i'll have to boot into it somewhere i'd have a "regular" display. not readily avail.
