Samba Configuration on BunsenLabs Boron

Hi there. I've used MX-Linux (21 & 23) past 4 years or so. It comes w/ (i think unique to MX, but maybe not) a graphical Samaba config tool that's super easy to setup.

I can't rem how to do it manually, and figured before I go willy nilly looking for a random guide on it, might as well consult the distro first!

It seems like there's a lot available in Bunsen that a Bunsen newb is going to have to locate, and become familiar with its way.

I don't require a GUI. Just figured I'd ask before diving in. I explained elswhere: it's an old PC tower w/ HDMI out to the HDVT, for my "TV" media entertainment.

Wireless mouse died during my install Bunsen lost-weekend (lost to the wireless key/ mouse, i swear!)
So. Keyboard only. It's a weird keybboard too -- where the "pipe" key is half-of-where the enter/return key is? Oh i hate that!

Also,
"I just switched to Sanka. Have a heart?"

Re: Samba Configuration on BunsenLabs Boron

Do you actually need samba? Most people are better off avoiding the hassle & just using cifs-utils to mount & access network shares, which is really quite easy that way.

Neither samba nor cifs-utils are installed by default in Bunsen, though it's simple enough to apt-get whichever you actually need, you'll probably need to find a guide, I don't remember there being one on here for samba. I do remember it being a PITA though, but then I was doing unusual things at the time involving active directory domains.

Re: Samba Configuration on BunsenLabs Boron

You'll need to install the samba package

https://wiki.debian.org/Samba?highlight … Network%29

If you have a MX usb available, you can boot the live session and figure out what tool you need from them. A lot of their tools are home brew scripts you can copy over and use on most any Debian system. You many need to install some additional packages for the particular language (python, perl etc ...)

Re: Samba Configuration on BunsenLabs Boron

Thank you!

I may try @Bearded_Blunder's recommendation.

I've been getting by fine w/ SSH

it's a Linux box on my LAN that i access from a windows box, as well as when i'm not at my regular office desk. So, Samba is just a convenience. I forget why i was wanting it yesterday to be true.

What is the Bunsen practice for something like Plex media server? I realize there are similar apps.

In all I'm really happy with this distro so far!

Thank you!

Oh. BTW. i added the debian testing sources repo and did the upgrade. i play around when i cant sleep and regret it the next day. so far, only thing i'm sad about is Telegram-Desktop. some qt library incompat. i'm not having a meltdown, but i might reinstall. it only takes 15 mins!

Re: Samba Configuration on BunsenLabs Boron

@Bearded_Blunder - i remember why I wanted Samba!
Clearly not super important. I was going through my list of network drives, and realized it wasn't there. Or, I want to have it included in the locations indexed by VoidTools Everything (which Linux Fsearch is allegedly inspired by?). Anyway, it's the easiest way to find a needle in a haystack-- for me-- as it has a syntax, "content:'search this text'"
I can do it w/ find and grep, but that sort of interface is tough to beat for multitasking and etc.

I'm not convinced it's a must have, however.

Re: Samba Configuration on BunsenLabs Boron

haha. cool. who is it that used to exclaim, "Awesome sauce!"
:sigh: i think it was this dude who used to take a smoke break sometimes when i did back in office times with Giorgio Tsukolos!

Tune in on the next episode of Ancient Offices, where we can hear the Ancient Office Worker Enthusiasts purport with resounding assurance, "Yes!"

Thank you!
Much appreciated! It's probably nearer the bottom of my to-do list. I just remembered i upgraded all kinds of stuff 'cause i'm... just can't sit still. oh boy. we'll see what happens.

It's solid as a rock so far. (added Debian testing to the repos), i think 1500+ upgrades. a few things have been kept back but llike 20 - 30 ... i'm not worried about. it only took away Telegram, for a QT dependency.

I just use it to watch TV, and code-myself-to-sleep.

Cheers!

(edit: sorry. this should be a good thread here. i'll prune this at a later time soon, so as to keep it relevant. sorry)

:aside: ain't no amount of better LAN setup that's going to make Freevee/ Tubi (etc.) switch it up on the 5-or-6 episodes of whatever they play all day long. You don't have to change the channel. I like that. But. Eventually, you get to know what the next thing they're going to say. Shatner's almost always fine. You gotta preserve it some.

Re: Samba Configuration on BunsenLabs Boron

@Bearded_Blunder - so, it seems the answer is "No"
I do not need Samba.
I would prefer to have Samba however, as it makes my life a helluva lot easier. Like that dip is allegedly one helluva good potato-chip dip. i wouldn't know. I don't eat potato chips.

This is the aforementioned GUI, RE: MX and Samba.
apparently it IS an MX software.

Well software from MX-Linux is usually compatible with Debian, you could try seeing if it'll work, but take precautions in case of a broken system.

It's entirely up to you if you prefer setting up and using Samba, it's your system, it's just typically easier to side-step doing so.
