Comments Requested - Introducing The Bunsenlabs Boron Desktop

This thread is the remains of a group effort to create the
Introduction to the Bunsenlabs Boron Desktop reusing the excellent,
Introduction to the Bunsenlabs Lithium Desktop by @damo.

The second post in this thread contained the actual submission, my first public draft. It was edited, decreed fit for service, and then graciously moved to the appropriate forum section; retaining my nick for credit. Thanks for all your help, @johnraff.

Bob

Enjoy.

New:

Please list corrections, and suggestions in this thread. Thanks for your time.

Original:

Posting here where I have write permission. Mods and admins know what to do. Apologizes for any extra work.

In this thread, please find an updated version of the excellent Introduction to the Bunsenlabs Lithium Desktop by @demo. The original help thread was closed and linked to a discussion thread in Index » News & Announcements » New Guide posted for Lithium user.

Going forward:

'The Forum' is welcome to say, "Thanks Bob; we'll take it from here."

I'll offer to create and maintain the new help thread in the correct forum section. Suggestions, corrections posted in the companion thread will be added to the main thread. I see the maintenance period to be a week or two as the details get worked out, and taper off after that. I'm agreeable with any changes in the help thread as needed.

Thank you.
Bob

Please, let's use this thread to discuss what to do with the new help thread; and not for corrections and contributions. Save that for the companion thread.

Thanks everyone for their time.

I'm not quite clear how many threads you're talking about here. 1yFKJ9U.gif
Could you list them up, with appropriate content guidelines and proposed locations?

johnraff wrote:

Me either. wink

In damo's example, the Intro ( Introduction to the Bunsenlabs Lithium Desktop) was placed in:
Index » Getting Started; and the thread was closed.

A companion thread was created in:
Index » News & Announcements» New Guide posted for Lithium users,
to discuss the Intro thread, and suggest changes.

From damo's thread:
aOXclRi.png

I would have followed that lead had I write permissions for the Getting Started section of the forum. So I started this thread to discuss how to proceed. I also posted the Intro itself, in this thread, because, pic or it didn't happen.

Matters not, what do do now.

The simplest might be to repurpose this thread for Corrections and Suggestions, which I'll implement; and a Mod/Admin with permissions could copy the finished Intro, minus the Suggestions, into: Index » Getting Started. Or expand my permissions and I'll take care of it.

Clear as mud? big_smile

Bob

edit:
Let me try to simplify; suggest we follow @damo's lead. The Intro thread, closed, in the Getting Started section and a Corrections and Suggestion thread in the News and Announcement scetion. Neither section can I write to. I wouldn't mind having my nick as the thread's author. Then I'll remove it from the post above, no need for the duplicate, if that is preferred.

I'm okay with however I can help.

Re: Comments Requested - Introducing The Bunsenlabs Boron Desktop

Look at this animated menu I just cooked up for the menu section. It was a lot of work getting the screenshots, editing them to the same size so everything lines up.

I think it needs to stay a little longer at each stop and transition quicker.

Re: Comments Requested - Introducing The Bunsenlabs Boron Desktop

^Brilliant!

You can work on the Boron Desktop Intro right here.
Edit Post #2, copying in those cool animations and any other of the improvements suggested in the Lithium threads that haven't yet been applied. When it's good enough to use (I think it's pretty much there already) then as a Mod I can split off post #2 from this thread and move it to Getting Started where it will be the top post of a new thread. You will remain as the original author no problem, although I don't think you'll be able to edit the post. Just tell me, or another Mod (or discuss it in the discussions thread), and we can edit it for you if something needs tweaking. A Mod can start a new topic for discussions in the News and Announcements section. Anyone can reply to topics there even if they can't start them.

Re: Comments Requested - Introducing The Bunsenlabs Boron Desktop

^ Yes, the path forward becomes clearer.

Seems inefficient to set it mod-edit only and then ask for comments; unless there's a Mod with free time.

Adding 'Comments Requested' to the title of this thread. Readers should voice their interests here in this thread.

Their won't be many, because, real life. I've tried hard to catch spelling, punctuation, etc, type errors. Most corrections should be factual. I've tested a lot of what's in 'The Intro', but not everything. Focus should be on factual errors.

Re: Comments Requested - Introducing The Bunsenlabs Boron Desktop

Many thanks for your work on this, Bob.
As you know it's a rather large item and right now I'm too tied up in other stuff to devote the time it would need to check it over thoroughly. If nobody else has done that in a couple of weeks, I'll come back. smile

Re: Comments Requested - Introducing The Bunsenlabs Boron Desktop

You're welcome. I really enjoyed creating it. Still looking for ways to get better menu shots. The big green square bothers me. Cheers for BL.

Bob

OH yes, no hurry, it's not going anywhere.

^ I think you did a great job.

Maybe I didn't understand you, but it seems to me that you want a transparent .gif background (instead of green)?

Something like this:

If you want, I'll post the commands (imagemagick)  I used.

Thank you; the words mean a lot.

Exectly that.

Really nice that you made the effort. many thanks. That's not bad:

Image willingly removed on behest of it's author.

The lingering green... We could try it with no fade between images. But I would miss it.

What's needed is a way to get jgmenu to print it's output on a transparent background.

Things i tried;

  • turning off drop shadows - the menu looses something, transparency is better expect for the rounded corners. At least on my tests, your rounded corners look better.

  • turning off transparency - gone are the sweet rounded corners, fail. Keirei for hhh.

If you want, I'll post the commands (imagemagick)  I used.

Never used it, dislike it's interface. From what I've seen it's task automation is sweet.

Thank you. All contributions are gratefully accepted.

Bob

Edit: After a good think; the issue with your welcome contribution might be applying the transparency after the gif is built. It could be applied to each 'menu open' shot, and then build the gif. But we still loose the drop shadow. Usable compromise, say I.

Re: Comments Requested - Introducing The Bunsenlabs Boron Desktop

Great work!

One of the scrots (login screen) leads to a 404, but I think that, when we move this to "Getting Started", the scrots should be hosted at bunsenlabs.org. That's up to @johnraff.

Don't fuss about the wallpaper color showing in your 2nd gif, IMO. If you want it to be absolutely seamless, do it with a cropped screencast. But every user knows how nested menus work, so I think it's not needed (what you have now is fine).

/my 2 cents

I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

Re: Comments Requested - Introducing The Bunsenlabs Boron Desktop

@r.chaffee53

I saw that you spent a lot of time and work on this tutorial, Bob.

I still like how it looks now, but if you want I'll explain how I changed the last .gif.

1) Right click > Save Image as .. > menu.gif
2) Copy menu.gif (Downloads folder) and Paste in HOME

Next (terminal):

convert menu.gif -fuzz 10% -transparent "#095460" new_menu.gif

Then:

convert -dispose background new_menu.gif -fuzz 10% -transparent "#06414B" -layers optimize new_menu.gif

You will get new_menu.gif in HOME.

Done.

Please edit your last post and remove my .gif.
In a similar way, you can try to get a better result.

First time I've used imgar for more than a single image.  I though they were all together. Yes, the images from @demo's work are lost.

... every user knows how nested menus work, so I think it's not needed (what you have now is fine).

The intention was to show what each menu option contains. And to add a little sparkle as a bonus. One of the differences from other menus is the extensive help section. Tried to highlight that throughout the work. Go or stay, whatever the elders decide is good for me.

Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the good info. Easy now that you've done that part.

Please edit your last post and remove my .gif.

Immediately if not sooner. Apologies if I've offended.

There's no need to apologize.
I asked you to remove my GIF so it doesn't spoil the great tutorial.
No need to confuse users.

I've just given you a few tips if you decide to make a change.

Good luck Bob!

I remember image hosting came up before. It's a risky business to get involved in IMO, and our server is already getting full, but OTOH commercial services go out of business and peoples' posts get broken as a result.

Suggested compromise: go on using sites like imgur (or whatever the poster has chosen) but for BL tutorials and the like, keep backup copies, maybe on GitHub, or some other cloud service. Then when the original image host goes down we can fix things.

Re: Comments Requested - Introducing The Bunsenlabs Boron Desktop

^ Dropbox, Google Drive, Photobucket, etc... GitHub is a great idea, just make a repo called BunsenLabs scrots. DeviantArt is another service that isn't going anywhere soon, it's been a site for 24 years. Only 14 years to go until bunsenlabs.org matches that.

I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?
