Managing the default audio outputs?

I'm getting familiar with my new machine (Thinkpad T15) and have had a small hiccup.

My desk setup has some speakers connected to the laptop via the headphone jack. I've also got another monitor attached via HDMI.

The audio wants to default to the HDMI output, but I want it to default to the headphone jack... and this also means the volume controls on the keyboard are trying to change the HDMI volume, not the headphone volume.

I can play with the volume via Pulseaudio or Alsamixer, but I can't figure out how to point the volume controls to the right output.

(It would be awesome if they just controlled whatever was active!)

Re: Managing the default audio outputs?

Is pavucontrol installed? Assuming you're using pulseaudio or pipewire.

I usually use that - I also have speakers connected via the headphone jack.

On the Output Devices tab you can select the Port you want as default.

For the volume control keys I use pamixer. Simple commands that work well with keybindings on any window manager.
