Updating nvidia drivers after updating kernel [Solved]

I am currently having issue with lightdm dying after upgrading to latest .22 kernel.  (rolled back to earlier one now)

in logs:

 no screens found(EE)

Seems very much to me that this is about nvidia driver that has been installed from nvidia own pages is not getting included when kernel is updated and nouveau is blacklisted so there is nothing X can start on so i was getting stuck at the tty prompt.

But here it gets weird as there are so many ways to ensure nvidia drivers are incorporated and i dont quite get how it works. This Arch linux video about installing nvidia-dkms seems to me to come closest to what i should do https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYlBCDBwCLQ but am i even close to being on the right track here?

What is the best way of handling nvidia drivers that are not from the official repository so that they tag along when you update your kernel?

Mind you official nvidia-driver did not work for me at all so i purged it out and went for the nvidia site latest driver using their installer and this worked flawlessly but i guess now comes the bill for that unfortunate 'quick fix' .

Re: Updating nvidia drivers after updating kernel [Solved]

A bit of update to this: nvidia-kernel-dkms DID fix the issue. But it also forced me to uninstall the later 550.50.9.x series driver which was installed from nvidia web page and instead offered me the uninstall script to get rid of this new driver and install the usuall nvidia-driver.

Was sweating a bit on this and prepared to remove noveau blacklisting when i get stuck at the tty again but lo and behold: it uninstalled the 550 series correctly and now i got the 530. series driver that debian comes with.

I also updated kernel manually to 6.1.0-22.amd64 and all went well.  So 'case solved' in a way.

How is performance with the 535 driver... are you noticing worse performance from the 550?

Did today a slew of game tests for ProtonDB. Got a older gen GeForce RTX 2060 so the driver version probably wont matter that much.

Tested some intensive 3D gameplay and FPS was good. Basically no difference between the two that i could tell.

Glad that you got it working back !

Props to @hhh for the link.

I would always upgrade the kernel & nvidia s at the same time as they pretty go hand in hand.

My Linux installs are as in my music; it s on Metal
