Basic conky tweaks help

My conky modifying knowledge is low so Im hoping for some help to change a couple of things.

First of all the config im using (from the #! forum) was for wireless but now Im using ethernet cable i changed everything in the network section from wlan0 to eth0 and it seemed to work. However, how do I edit this line to correctly ID my Ethernet (eth0) connection?

${font sans-serif:normal:size=8}ID:$alignr${ethernet_essid eth0}

Next id like to add some color. How would i go about changing the color of each sections title text and the bar graph bars to orange?

${font sans-serif:bold:size=8}XEON X5450 ${hr 2}
${font sans-serif:normal:size=8}Core frequency $color $alignr ${freq_g (1)} GHz
Core 1 temp: $alignr ${hwmon 0 temp 1} C

ESSID is the extended ID for a wireless network. There's no EESID for an ethernet connection.

If you're using a conky from #!, I'm sure you will have a list of colors, before your TEXT line. Something like this:

default_color DCDCDC #220 220 220	Gainsboro
color0 8FBC8F #143 188 143	DarkSeaGreen
color1 778899 #119 136 153	LightSlateGray
color2 FF8C00 #255 140   0	DarkOrange
color3 7FFF00 #127 255   0	Chartreuse
color4 FFA07A #255 160 122	LightSalmon
color5 FFDEAD #255 222 173	NavajoWhite
color6 0000CD #  0 191 255	Medium blue
color7 00FFFF #  0 255 255	Cyan
color8 FFFF00 #255 255   0	Yellow
color9 FF0000 #255   0   0	RED

If you do, you just have to add ${colorX} (where "X" is the number of the color you want) before the part you want to color, followed by ${color}, when you want to abandon that color, and go back to the default one.

Hope that helps. smile

Re: Basic conky tweaks help

To change your heading to orange (any color):

${font sans-serif:bold:size=8}${color orange}NETWORK ${hr 2}${color}

everything between ${color orange} and ${color} will be orange; the ${color} is necessary to return to the default color defined in the configuration before the TEXT. That will also work on your cpu bars; if you have graphs you want to color orange, you need to define the gradient colors for the graph.

Re: Basic conky tweaks help

woof, it's going to become very tedious for you and us if your equest every single conky variable from us.
much better if you read the documentation.
this is all you need to get started:
before TEXT:
http://conky.sourceforge.net/config_settings.html
after TEXT:
http://conky.sourceforge.net/variables.html

have fun and show us what you made!

Re: Basic conky tweaks help

Thanks for explaining, i understand its tedious, I dont often have the inclination to change my conky. I get confused with the format of symbols, brackets, spaces etc. The things i try rarely work so I avoid it so save fustrating myself haha.

Inodoro the conky i use has been added to and stripped down over time i probably deleted the useful information at the beginning.  When i tried the numbers from 1-9 it was pink everytime, so i type the color name and it works.

The ID of my ethernet connection was too difficult for me to figure out so i deleted that line and decided its not really needed.

I posted in the screenshot thread, check out the colors.. screenshot thread

i understand. conky syntax really isn't easy - not on the eyes, not on your sense of logic.
but then, there's so much you can do with it...
[ actually, conky is moving on to a lua-based syntax; it might be worth trying out conky 1.10 with the new syntax. ]

The things i try rarely work so I avoid it so save fustrating myself haha.

the way to go is, download something you like, and start tweaking it and see what happens.

btw, this search has some interesting results.
