Conky on Wayland still seems to be a work in progress: https://github.com/brndnmtthws/conky/issues/56
...elevator in the Brain Hotel, broken down but just as well...

^ Interesting, the issue was raised in 2014 but was nearly dead until January 5th. The Arch Wiki on Conky links that github link for conky on Wayland. So... to be determined?
Just today I decided to switch to the GNOME Wayland session instead of Xorg because videos (mp4 and mkv) on both mpv and vlc looked radically better, with major screen tearing on xorg and none on Wayland. I tried everything to get X11 to match Wayland (20-intel.conf and mpv options) but it wasn't even close. And this is with a Tiger Lake GPU, which is, what, 11th generation Intel integrated graphics? Not cutting edge but not exactly legacy.
However, that means I've had to drop thunar for nautilus and xfce4-screenshooter for gnome-screenshot.
Let's hope Xfce on Wayland gets some serious attention.
https://wiki.xfce.org/releng/wayland_roadmap
But isn't Xfce basically a one-man project? That seems like a dour prospect.
I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

Wait, is that a Wayland thing? Because conky is working fine for me on GNOME/Wayland. I'm just using a basic one, though, no fancy lua stuff.
Yes, this is 'real' Wayland.
No Xwayland in between.
Of course I meant conky with images, lua etc. No simple text conky.
What version of Conky are you currently using with GNOME? And, do you have Wayland or Xwayland?

Exactly!
Somewhere in there someone feared that Conky's code would have to be rewritten because of this... ![]()

That is exactly the point.
With Wayland, tearing is a thing of the past, as a first point.
And, secondly, the greater security of the system by eliminating communication between the display server and the window manager (ssh protocol ?).
It will probably be a 'radical change' like the introduction of systemd.

The arguments are the same. Wayland works for a large majority of use cases (I have been using it for six years or so), the idea that it is untested buggy software which offer no benefits is getting a bit ridiculous.
Offline
How big a change is Wayland from the point of view of rewriting software though? Will we need, for example, Wayland- and X-Org-compatible versions of Firefox and LibreOffice to run concurrently?
I know I'm showing my ignorance here but I honestly haven't a clue about this topic.

And, do you have Wayland or Xwayland?
GNOME 45 on Ubuntu Mantic provides Xwayland, so that's why it's working for me, I assume. Conky 1.19.4, a few versions behind current 1.19.8
However, that means I've had to drop thunar for nautilus and xfce4-screenshooter for gnome-screenshot.
So thunar runs, but the type-to-search feature (open thunar, type "V" and Videos is selected, for example) is broken even under Xwayland, the search box that appears at the bottom of the window is cut off. xfce4-screenshooter opens but doesn't take a screenshot.
I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

A huge change is that X does high quality color management, while Wayland does not. I know this from my participation in a raw image processing community, but I don't know enough about it to discuss the technicalities.

I've recently installed Arco Linux L (L for Large), which is based on Arch, and am impressed with it; it has some interesting software choices such as alacritty for the default terminal. The only problem I'm having with it is a glitch when I'm typing in alacritty (I have to type some letters in twice before they'll display, for example).
One good thing I noticed was that after I'd installed it the sound came back in Fedora, which I had assumed was broken; I can only assume it's a weird interaction between the boot manager in OpenSUSE, which wrote the grub menu it was booting up from before, and the Fedora kernel. Or something.

Yesterday my archlinux installation with KDE plasma (from 02.03.2015
) was updated to plasma 6.
Today I realize with 'joy' that KDE still doesn't give a shit about the user's settings and flushes everything the user has created. This is exactly the main reason why I stopped using kde with debian...

Yes, my preferred option with KDE is to have it available for the software applications I use from it (such as the text editors Kate and KWrite) but run those applications from a different window manager or desktop environment such as XFce or Fluxbox.
In other news; I've just updated Voyager, which was a 409 MB download in total and so not so bad. I think Voyager is an underrated distro which deserves more attention than it gets.

Something a bit different here which some people may remember; I'm posting from Damn Small Linux (DSL) live, which in its current incarnation is based on AntiX and designed to run on very old computers. The browser (BadWolf) runs without Javascript by default and you have to enable JS if you want to use it.
Otherwise, most of the applications will be familiar to anyone who's used a distro designed for low-resource computers in the past; abiword, gnumeric, mtpaint (which I prefer to Gimp), mutt, xcalc etc. The default window manager is Fluxbox with a very cool burnt orange theme and wallpaper, but JWM is also available from the menu.
Mainly because it uses such small applications, DSL is one of the very few distros that can still be burnt to and run from a CD-R. Early days yet but I already like it a lot.

I have it multibooted on my "testing" laptop and it really flys on a modern pc. Very fun and interesting to play with. I dont rely on it for everyday use but it does work very well for a debian based distro in my opinion.
I use Arch BTW! If it is not rolling, it is stagnant!

The problem is still unsolved, although I think I have worked through all the documentation and error messages.
So for the time being I can state:
- sway with Xwayland (a dependency in labwc) works
- sway with Wayland does not work (no PW query appears when mounting (click in Thunar) other partitions. Apparently the 'connection to the display' (?) is missing.
I found the answer to my problem in the German wiki of ubuntu:
WWayland also comes with an implementation of an XServer by default with Xwayland. The Wayland compositor automatically starts programs that cannot work with Wayland in an X session using Xwayland. This happens, for example, if you - working insecurely! - starts a graphical application with root rights using sudo. This would not be possible under Wayland itself, as this would mean a user change in the running session, which the security guidelines of the Wayland protocol do not allow.
Compare the terminal window with the start of Conky.
On the left is only Wayland; on the right is the same with Xwayland.

Thanks for the tip.
That seems to be the error, as discussed here before with @johnraff, when an 'Upload image' is made from Boron to Imgur.

I can't get behind it.

I take it all back.
After 7 days and 5 times pacman -Syu, KDE actually uses my old settings again. Only kaffeine crashes after 2 minutes without comment. ![]()
