If you want to test the health of your hard drive but don't want to shell out the $90 or so that a copy of Gibson Research's SpinRite costs, I've been impressed by a program called Hard Disk Sentinel which I've just used. It runs from the hard drive if required and produces a listing of important information concerning the drive;
HDD Device 0: /dev/sda
HDD Model ID : TOSHIBA DT01ACA050
HDD Serial No: 86LXA2VAS
HDD Revision : MS1OA800
HDD Size : 476940 MB
Interface : S-ATA Gen3, 6 Gbps
Temperature : 32 °C
Highest Temp.: 40 °C
Health : 100 %
Performance : 100 %
Power on time: 442 days, 9 hours
Est. lifetime: more than 1000 days
The hard disk status is PERFECT. Problematic or weak sectors were not found and there are no spin up or data transfer errors.
No actions needed.
HDD Device 1: /dev/sdb
HDD Model ID : USB SanDisk 3.2Gen1
HDD Serial No: 01016d34ea1aaa06abdf
HDD Revision : 1.00
HDD Size : 238559 MB
Interface : SCSI
Temperature : Unknown °C
Highest Temp.: Unknown °C
Health : Unknown %
Performance : Unknown %
Power on time:
Est. lifetime:
And also, unlike most such utilities, it has a Linux version.

What about smartctl?

Hi Martin,
Hard Disk Sentinel is very succinct and also gives me all the information I really need about my hard drive.
I've tried smartctl and it is much more verbose; I almost feel I should apologise in advance for posting this;
localhost:/home/graham # smartctl --all /dev/sda
smartctl 7.2 2021-09-14 r5237 [x86_64-linux-5.14.21-150500.55.28-default] (SUSE RPM)

Thanks, I'll try and remember to do that myself next time.
