I might have a look at Tutanota too.
Tutanota is simple and ok. You can test it with a free account, very cheap entry level. No extra storage though, but you can pay for a GB or 2 if you need it. On the entry level you get five aliases, but if you need 40 you can buy that too. They got a pricing calculator where you can cherry pick what you want and see the total amount.
I tried Protonmail a couple of years ago but it wasn´t for me. Don´t know why, just did not like for no special reason.

Maybe secure e-mail services have their flaws too? Rob Braxman thinks so;
"Some are quick to promote apps as being safe for your use just because they are encrypted. I will talk about how many of the popular apps that are commonly thought to be safe because of encryption are actually wrought with danger because pundits who claim this knowledge haven't really thought about the flaws of each of these apps.
The main flaw is something called a relationship map. Because of the meta data surrounding the use of each of these apps, this flaw can result in complete identification of all parties involved in a conversation and their profiles. I will explain how this occurs and how understanding how this works is part of what the intelligence community calls SIGINT (Signals Intelligence).
Watch and learn about this little puzzle that will challenge your brain and your thought process."

I guess that nothing is perfect and absolute. In the end you have to make a decision of who you are going to trust?

I agree. Despite everything he says in the video I'm still going to use ProtonMail, simply because as you say there isn't a perfect one and it does at least have a free option. I tried Tutanota as well, but it only gives you one shot at signing up for the free account and I messed it up unfortunately.

Yeah I have heard that Tutanota can be a little tricky sometimes. Probably fixable if one contact their support and have patience. Anyway, what I wanted to say is that Tutanota now have changed their entry level, more storage, more aliases and more bang for some more buck of course.
Mailfence might be an alternative to check out.
