Thanks again for all this high-grade input Al! I'll be in with some comments of my own soon, but there's something else I want to work on today.
eight.bit.al wrote:I think a root discussion might be where does BL go from here. And how does that effect the menu.
BL's core audience has been the more technical wordsmith. If i have that wrong, for sure, enlighten me. I see that segment shrinking, or at least growing slowly compared to other user types.
Who is(are) BL future audience(s)? Does it need to change?
IMHO, most BL users can and will change to menu to suit. So much of this discussion may be moot. To catch new users of any caliber, all of BL should be as attractive as suits our ethos.
A very important topic, with lots of things to be said. Could you start a new thread for this?
We ought to get a new road map drawn up before Carbon.
As requested.

If I've read between the lines well, johnraff has been handed several hats (jobs) that were vacated recently. First order of biz might be to recruit new members.

^Agreed.
My take on that is to make it clear that the project is up and running, so people feel inspired to contribute.
Of course you understand that someone can't just walk in off the street and be handed the keys to the castle? Trust has to be established. Forum members who show some commitment to the project, a certain level of ability and, just as much as that, willingness to learn necessary skills and do work, would likely be invited to join the dev team in time. ie first off, we'd be looking for useful contributions of actual code here on the forum or on GitHub. It's a do-ocracy.
(eg I personally would welcome with open arms any people who were into - or wanted to get into - Debian software packaging. I guess a basic grasp of Git is important too.)
To get there, obviously more forum members would be a good start. For that, timely releases probably help, hence the need to get Boron out soon after Bookworm.
@eight.bit.al your recent contributions on various fronts are an excellent example of the kind of forum activity it would be good to see more of!
Very happy to see all the recent Conky activity here too, even if that's not specifically promoting the BL project itself.
The wider discussion of who - if anybody - the spinoff is intended for impinges on this too. If there is little demand, there will be no rush of new forum members and the project might as well close down. We came close to that point a while back in fact, but a succession of glowing reviews on Distrowatch of all places got me fired up enough to continue a while longer. (The latest DW review was unkind though, and got several things totally wrong.)
More on the intended "consumers" later...

Indeed. Outstanding, thank you!

I thought it was trade decoder rings and a pinky swear. Either way I wouldn't belong to any organization that would let the likes of me in.

Seriously, thanks for the kind words.

I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.

The lack of responses speaks loudly.
A search of DistroWatch; based on Debian, with Openbox turns up five hits.
BunsenLab
Sparky Linux
and three more (noname and specialty)
IMHO BL needs to get more user friendly
and pretty to escape becoming an 'also ran'.
What are the DL totals, share that with us?

What are the DL totals, share that with us?
Is it possible to know that with torrents?

^Nothing right now. I'm kind of busy and still getting to grips with the intricacies of the server. Quite likely the direct download stats are in there somewhere. There are other things I'd rather devote my time to atm.

Hat in hand if BL said "We're sticking to our guns, we don't care if no one uses us."

Let's see if we can hammer out a mission statement before long. Not being a commercial venture, the motivating factors are a bit different from Windows. OTOH there'd be no point in doing the work for no-one at all.

When Boron is released, BL should have it's
ducks in a row putting as good a face as can be had.
How can I help?

Thanks for the offer!
(Your recent input has already been very helpful.)
Maybe the first thing you could do is to spell out exactly what you think BL should do in order to have its ducks in a row for the Boron release.

I think we would put different ducks in the row.
Let's work on your ducks.

edit:
I just don't have hope meaningful change will get done before Boron.

hhh - will you create a theme for Boron?
Maybe a boron flame could be used as the logo on the wallpaper. There's a lot of'em on the web.
I remember a green theme you did a good while back, kinda a nature scene. Maybe had a turtle on it, and water?

Don't sound so despairing! I've said multiple times that I think it's more important to get Boron out on time - a solid Bookworm-based BL release - than to make any "meaningful changes" right now. Many people seem to be OK with BL the way it is. I think Beryllium and Lithium are both decent usable systems.
Once Boron is out, we should have a good couple of years to rethink all kinds of stuff before Carbon becomes urgent.

He's on it. There'll probably be something in Screenshots soon.
